I noticed there is not a whole lot of information on the web about Astro-Gadgets belt driven Goto systems and figured I would  share my experiences.  Everything out of the box was built well (nothing seemed cheap).

Installing the system on the mount was cake.  Now onto software.

You have to install Ascom and Eqmod drivers and programs (many here are already familiar with this)

The instructions that come on the cd sent with the kit are okay at best but it would be very hard to figure out if you were not very good at computers or researching the rabbit hole that is google.

After getting all of the drivers set up I finnally managed to move my telescope with the motors :)

So i didnt know this although im sure there are those out there that do.

Stepper motors in microstepping mode make very high pitch noise.  Hard to explain but from what Astro Gadget tells me its something you learn to live with.  You can turn the current down on the steppers to quiet them alitt but you will lose torque.  My scope is too big for that.  When i bought my Cg5Adv used the motors were okay at best.  Comparing the 2 the Eqstar seems to be much smoother.

This is going to be an on going project for me for several months so if you have any questions please ask.  The purpose of this post is to give information to people looking for a possible Goto system to replace broken or inefficient gotos on a still capable mount.

Sorry if this post seems like a run on sentence. Im not too good keeping my mind steady.

I will post pics soon

Fitz 8710 - I did the same thing with my CG-5 ASGT earlier this year and have been very happy with it the few times I've taken it out.  I did purchase a Orion SynScan V5 hand controller for my unit, which is a nice add on.

Oh very nice. What scope are you running? I know im over loading mine for AP. Im hoping the steppers with belts and autoguiding will help. I also couldnt get the wifi to run very reliably over the phone.

I have eq star on my GP2 and like it a lot. Mostly i use it for tracking and not go to. Just as you discovered i was surprised by the high frequency warble sounds coming from the RA stepper motor during tracking.

Yeah your ears kinda get used to it though. Its the noise at idle that is the worse though.

I have used both the C8 and C9.25 on it for visual... handles both really well.

So here is a compressed image of what i managed last night.  Stacked 30 images no darks flats biases and quickly adjusted on photoshop.

203mm 4.9 Orion Reflector

Rebel T6 (1300d) full spectru.

Cg5 Advanced with Eqstar plus goto by Astro-Gadget

No guiding

APT and photoshop cs

Just a reminder.  This is an old 2006-2008 CG 5 clone. This is probably minimum of what ot can do.  I will keep posting updates.

Not too shabby.

Thanks for creating this thread.

How are the instructions for connecting the gears and belts to the existing scope? I have a Celestron CG5, but I don't see where I would connect everything. I'm guessing that I'll have to remove some of the covers for the motor/gear mechanism on my mount.

Are there any instructions you can post?

Hap

Hi CeeKay, I'm assuming the Orion unit plugs into a port on the EQStar unit. What's the difference between the Orion controller and the Celestron controller that comes with the GoTo unit on the CG-5?

Thanks,

Hap

To the first question. There was minimal instruction on putting the motors on the CG5. Just a picture sayong do it like this. You will need to remove all the plastic covers and motors/gears until all you have left is the worm gear arbors. Its very simple to install by the picture. Just uses hex bolts. As for installing the gears just make sure that they are not angled so you dont tear up your belt. You can use a ruler to get them close. There was also no instruction on how tight the belts need to be. From what i got online about stepper belts is you want them tight enough to grip well and not slip but not so tight that it stresses the 6mm arbor. If you recieve one and need pictures or guidance just let me know that is what this post is for.

As for the nexstar hand control I am unsure. I only know by what Ceekay said that Synscan has worked. I understand that you want the ease of a hand controller but if you are doing any AP Eqmod is your holy grail. Then again using a pc means more crap you gotta lug around so i get it.

Sorry for rambling... such a long post..lol

This is very helpful! My goal is to eventually get into AP, so I'll be going the eqmod with pc route at some point. My question about using my current hand controller was mainly curiosity about whether it would have any usefulness (otherwise I'll put it up for sale).

I'm going to go ahead and order the EQStar. Especially now since my current drive unit is dead.

This is the mounting hole for the RA axis.  When you remove your old motors it will all make sense.  :)

So far im happy with it.  I have spent very minimal time with it on AP due to weather.  First impressions were great.  Many AP pros will look at my set up and say that its too much to ask of that mount.   They are absolutely right too.  Doesnt mean i wont try. :)

Make sure you give those guys in Ukraine time.  May take a month or two to get your unit, especially this year, and especially if your ordering during holiday.

Just some friendly advice on getting into AP.
Get ready to buy new stuff... and selling and trying something else out. Then realizing you need something different. Then have to work lots of overtime to pay for it.
There are alot of people on Cloudy Nights that have very good input on AP. Use their knowledge so you know what your getting into. It is a rabbit hole deeper than the Mariana trench, and thats no joke.
All of that aside i think the return you get from getting pictures of the night sky is completely worth the 100s of hours reading and researching. If it was easy everybody would do it.

Thats just my inexperienced opinion.

Hi Hap - I was looking for the email from Valentin about you question, but can't find it.  It was something to do with how the EQStar was designed for the Orion unit.  It plugs into the HC port on the EQstar.  The HC software is almost like the Nexstar controller, but there are a couple of differences when you do your site set up that can confuse you if you haven't sat down with it ahead of time.

Here's the link to the Orion HC for you to check out:

Well, since I'll be removing the CG-5 electronics and motors, I figure I'll do the DIY Hypertune while everything is opened up. Looking forward to the project, and I'll see about taking photos every step of the way.
