Hap - I think you'll be happy with it.  Pulled mine out yesterday hoping to go out and view the Great Conjunction (clouds cleared out after Jupiter and Saturn were below the horizon).  Fingers are crossed for tonight, but woke up this morning to fog and black ice in the area...

That is exactly what i did when my control board died. I didnt quite hypertune but i looked for rough edges and did a complete regreasing of both the ra and dec. You can also sell your original encoder motors and parts. Some people are looking for them.

Got out the night before last.  Finnally got my guiding to kick in through phd2 (was having driver issues with my sv305)  guiding in the ra was decent enough considering the scope but my backlash in declination was 18000ms  (whoah).  Could be the CG5 mount.  So i will re attempt maybe messing around with uni directional guiding in the dec axis.  Oh and if you want an easy way for polar alignment PAY for sharpcap pro.   It is completely worth it.  Where has it been my whole life lol.

I was attempting to photograph Ngc2024 Flame nebula but the moon was out and my subs were washed out.  It seems like the eqstar and eqmod ascom were communicating like it should though.  So if anything it was good practice.

Attached are my phd2 report and my very frozen tube lol

I too got the AstroGadget EQStarPro to upgrade my manual Vixen GP to GoTo. Best money I ever spent in this hobby.

NICE looking setup there.

So update on Eqstar And my Newt.

There is no update haha.   5 weeks straight of clouds.  Still going.

I did some recent updates.  Better guide scope.  Also a better mounting for my guide scope that hopefully eliminates any major flexure issues ( other than mirror movement).

Let me know what you think.

Thanks for this thread. I've got a 3rd hand Exos2gt that I'm wondering about whether or not an upgrade would be worth it. The gears are pretty chewed up.

Not a problem, im seeing more postings on EQ Star lately. Definitely worth your time upgrading it if you like your mount. If you dont like using a laptop go ahead and pick up a synscan controller.

I'm not sure if I like the mount yet, still waiting for some clear skies :) I'll post here if I grab one though, thanks :)

I am considering EQstar for an old lxd75 I have. I already have a synscan v5 hand control. Does it plug is directly or is there something else needed to make it work.

I looked over the documentation but haven’t found anything about using the synscan controller.

Thanks

There's a port on the control box marked "HC"... that's where you plug in to.

The purpose of this post is to give information to people looking for a possible Goto system to replace broken or inefficient gotos on a still capable mount.

Fitz,

I just stumbled onto this thread..... bookmarked!

So your mount is the ASGT correct?

Nice to know that there is a solution in case my ASGT decides to quit working. Parts are no longer available for them, as everyone knows.

Very interesting.... lots of good info here, thanks for sharing!

Looking forward to the updates on this.

Cheers,

Temp

Thank you. Lots of good people on this thread right now so if you have any questions let us know.

Yes it is a Cg5 Advanced. Other than Declination backlash which is common in this mount this Eqstar is a great improvement. This will hold me over for a long while. My plans are to start saving for a Ioptron CEM60. Hopefully by the end of the year. ( 8 inch newt on a cg5 is pretty finnicky)

Update on Eqstar!

Finnally got a clear night. Got set up polar aligned with sharpcap. Slewed on over to the rosette nebula and figured i would give it a go.
Finnally got my Phd2 guiding to kick in decently (had to balance east heavy).

I am 100 percent sure any problems im fighting is due to mechanical issues with my mount. I am asking an old cg5 to carry a 26 lb newtonian rofl2.gif

Anywho heres the results (please ignore the newbie processing)

Rosette Nebula
Canon T6 Full Spectrum Mod (Svbony CLS filter and Baader RCC1 Coma Corrector)
STARFIELD 50mm Guidescope
SV Bony 305 for Guiding Camera.

50 200 second subs ISO 800
50 200 second darks
50 Bias
50 Flats

Stars slighty elongated. 200 seconds is too much for this mount and scope.

And poor processing

I have to say other then longevity testing im thinking if you want a reliable goto upgrade or fix then EQstar is for you.

Here is a link to a better version of the Rosette.  The one above is super blown out.

I have spent alot of money on this endeavor so i decided to take the hopefully final step. I have an Ioptron CEM70 with tripier arriving on tuesday to replace my cg5 eq star. I need a bigger mount with less fiddly frustration. This has nothing to do with the Eqstar alone. I believe the Eqstar pro motors and computer are a very good purchase and worth the time. I will be selling my Eqstar pro and Cg5 soon. If anyone is interested let me know. I will probably be posting the sale later this week or the next.

So Hap, did you receive your EQStarProEQ5 yet?  I am curious about the processing and delivery time since I just ordered one myself.

Don

I just ordered the EQStarProEQ5. Can't wait to get it in.

I ordered the eqstar pro for EQ5 on Jan 22 and just received it yesterday (I am in NJ, US). Am in the process of installing it on my EXOS2-gt (firstlight/bresser). Will update you all once this is up and running.

I've ordered one as well for my Exos2GT. Very much looking forward to reading about how the installation process goes for you!

Not bad Ji-Soo!

That was less than three weeks for order processing and delivery. Perhaps Astro-Gadget has managed to maintain their parts supply and internal functions despite the disruptive effect of the pandemic. At this rate all of us should have our kits long before St. Patrick’s Day.

I bought an Eqdrive upgrade kit for my CG4. The power requirement recommends 24V. What did you guys use for your power? Lead-acid battery or lithium?

I always used a basic ac 12v 5 amp power brick using ac. I have tested it with normal 12v battery with ciggarette plug. It doesnt need 24v. Its just an option.

Alexander is fast! Even with weather-related delays my EQStarPro kit arrived in less than four weeks. 2/3/2021 to 2/25/2021

This kit was well packed and included a CD. Now, if only this clear weather can continue for a while...

I have an older non-goto CG5 Mount. Would this EQstar kit bundle fit and work?

Cheers
