Has anyone come across the Questar GEM mount. I understand that only 5 were made. I have a opportunity to buy one, but not sure how to value it in the purchase. Obviously its not GOTO but has optical scales and electronic setting circle displays. Any advise would be appreciated.

Truly will depend on what the market will bear.  There was one user in the groups.io that recently posted some pictures.  If the price is right I am sure lots of people would jump on the opportunity as a collectible.  Otherwise it is like the Zeiss APQ’s or Bitcoin.  You have to speculate and play to win.

If you buy it, I’d be most grateful if you might post a few images. I’ve never seen one, and many here have probably never seen one, either...

Thanks kindly,

Ron

These pictures are insane... the same beautiful design, construction, and esthetic we’d only ever expect from Questar.

Thanks for sharing...

That "90" inscription is a little "cringe" I must say.

DROOL...

All I have to look forward to is the 1 BILLION lottery drawing.

At least that mount is tangible! Wonder if they wish to include that stand? And that 7?

What a dream setup!!!

Lucky fellow that Vito...

That is a great looking mount.  Something I would expect from Questar Corporation.  It looks like it might be more suited for the Questar 7 Astro OTA, because it has a star diagonal that can be rotated to a comfortable position for visual work.

When using a GEM mount, I find that the ability to rotate the eyepiece with a star diagonal can be helpful with maintaining a comfortable observing position.  Even the Q3.5 on its fork mount has a limited ability to do so.

Hello:

Yes I agree. I plan on using the Questar mount and Q7 T with one of our electric height adjustable piers which you can raise and lower for eyepiece comfort. I will post a pic when I get it set up.

Interesting. I see that it has built-in encoders and a handset that looks like TV SkyTour or NGC-max. Odd that being a Questar, it doesn’t have engraved setting circles. Of course, there is that ‘cringe-worthy’, off-kilter 90°.

The “90” offset was due to the camera angle. It’s straight 😀

The Q7 T and Questar GEM finally made it home today. It took some trial and error with the counterweights. But I finally have it balanced. Now all I have to do is get it on the other side of the window onto my patio smile.gif
