I bought my Astroscan used in the late 1990's to use as a travel scope.  There is a white, paper sticker  in the barrel with a handwritten number, 12578.  My guess is that this is the serial number.  Is there any way to determine when the scope was manufactured?

Nope. It's a guess.

 

I'd guess it was made in the 70's.  I believe all the 12,000's were in the 70's. IIRC, my phone conversation with Edmund many years ago led to them being sure anything in the 13,000 range was still 70's. There are very subtle changes that a picture might help date. Kind of like the early VW bug, they all look the same to most but a collector can fine pick the details. The Astroscan is also somewhat similar to the bug in design.
