I have an Ultima 8 vintage about 1991. It has the extreme heavy duty rubber coated “field tripod”. Has anyone ever used this tripod with a losmandy gm8? What sort of adapters did you use? I am considering “deforking” and going with a gm8 for a variety of reasons. it would be nice to recycle a perfectly good tripod.

Your adapter has to fit this ( from http://www.losmandy.com/access.html ) :

In the day (back when Losmandy was the source of the G9 (GM-8 w/the G11 "D" saddle) they made an adapter that was fastened to the CG-5 hub (a copy of the Vixen AL110 tripod). The adapter had a second set of holes that were threaded for 5/16-18. These holes lined up with three unthreaded holes on the top of the field tripod.
Shouldn't hard to turn one out. You wouldn't need the bores for the CG-5 mounting.

Where do those fit into GM8 as shown on Losmandy pages ? The system is the same as G11.

I attached a Losmandy MA adapter to the top of a Meade field tripod with just a little drilling and using some self tapping screws. It looks like the MA could be adapted to fit the Celestron tripod as well.
Here's a diagram of the MA's base plate plate hole pattern. You can always drill your own holes, as necessary.
