A friend of mine is wanting to build a 6" refractor. I remember recently seeing a thread about 6" objective suppliers but now I can't find it. Can anyone please point me to it or perhaps note some suppliers?

I also looked through the ATM forum with no luck.

Thanks!

I am also wanting to build a refractor. A 4" or 6" f/15. Istar Optical is currently selling 6" objectives in various f ratios for just short of 800 USD. I have noticed about a month or two ago someone was selling a lightly used 6" f/10 objective in the classified ads for a considerable discount. Edmund Optics has 102mm, 116mm, 128mm, 140mm Large Achromatic Lenses in stock for about 1200 USD.

There are many optical shops that will design and build a lens for you. There is LuminFlow, LLC located in Zeeland, Michigan. The company I work for has used them in the past to design and manufacture custom lenses for a product.

A short list from the Photonics buyers guide.

Align Optics, Inc

Apollo Optical Systems, Inc

Applied Optics, Inc

Edmund Optics

Global Precision Optics

JML Optical

Lumin Flow, LLC

Rainbow Research Optics, Inc

Reynard Corp.

Rocky Mountain Instrument Company

These suppliers can design, manufacture and package a lens for you. And all of these are located in the USA.

D&G optical has been producing achromatic objectives, telescopes, and other parts at reasonable cost for at least a couple decades. A 6" objective in a push-pull collimatable cell is currently $995: http://www.dgoptical.com/objective.htm

If you want a 6 inch refractor objective there are currently a few places (some mentioned above):

IStar (http://www.istar-opt...achromatic.html)

APM telescopes apo (http://apm-telescope...m/item/33373636)

Ninbo Barride (

Past that you would need to keep a close eye on the classified section on cloudynights

You can also try to get a used or new Explorer Scientific (or Bresser) AR-152. It comes in 900 or 1200mm Focal length. I got an objective for about $200 from MASILMW who is a vendor here. The quality is excellent.
