I just got a new tripod that came with both a flat head to mount a mount on and....this guy (pictured below).  Not really being a photography person myself, what the heck is it used for?!

What tripod i is it!?looks to me that sits into the tripod head and that pin on top is for an Equatorial mount so can be adjusted to Polaris

Looks like an azimuth adjustment pin. It lets you adjust the mount left and right for obtaining polar alignment.

It looks like the convertor for the tripod to be used with common astronomy mounts like EQ5, Vixen GP, CG5 etc.

It is, in fact, the Sightron tripod that plyscope mentioned.  The only gear I've seen in person is what I've managed to acquire in the 6 months or so I've been at this, so I'll blame that for my ignorance on fancy mounts. 

 

I will put that piece safely aside for later upgrades, thanks all!
