With Galaxy season near, I figured its about time I learn to plate solve since I'm going to need this for AP. Anyway, I run a Celestron AVX in conjunction with APT. I have tried running it in conjunction with Stellarium but it worked once and never again. So does anybody have some good plate solving software recommendations, I'd prefer free software if possible.

PlateSolve2 works great for me. Goto++ in APT will use it to plate solve, then center the object. Works for my CGEM, should be fine with the AVX.

I used Platesolve2 until I found ASTAP. You can configure APT for both, ASTAP is very fast.

Platesolve 2

Closest thing to magic I’ll ever experience.
really enjoy using APT, as well.

+1 ASTAP.

I have tried running it in conjunction with Stellarium but it worked once and never again.

You need to work on this first.  You can try to plate solve an image from anyone from anywhere.  The usefullness to us is that we can tell the mount it's not where it thinks it is.  Unless you can communicate to your mount so that it can move where you want it to, the best part about plate solving will be unavailable to you.  Get good at communicating with your mount.

Platesolve 2... ASTAP... Platesolve2... ASTAP...

I use Platesolve 2 and it works great, no problems with it.

But my buddy Jim likes ASTAP and I suppose that it works just as good.

I would guess that either would do, and both are FREE!  cool.gif

And plate solving is the best thing to come out since the cavemen came out of the caves. lol.gif

EDIT: I do have to admit that TP was a genius idea. Rates right up there with plate solving.

ok, I shouldn't but I can't resist! The bidet was a genius idea, send the TP back to the caves!

Platesolve2 works great, I had no issues with it but the blinding speed of ASTAP is amazing. For me ASTAP was 10-30x faster at solving. Still, either is a great improvement over not platesolving, I agree solving is one of the best things ever. Oh, and ASTAP does a lot of stuff other than solving. It has analysis features, livestacking, and other useful features, so worth checking out whether you end up using it or not.

Yep. I use APT and ASTAP, too. I used PS2 for a long time, but switched to ASTAP after trying it the first time. You can use it for both blind and near solving.

Just to be different, I really enjoyed doing all blind solves with ASPS in APT. Solved fits images in 8 sec. Never used PS2 because ASPS worked so well.

Just recently tried out ASTAP though and it solves in about 2 seconds. ASTAP is now my goto plate solver (pun intended).

ASTAP.  Fast, even on a Raspberry Pi.
