In general, were the red tubes or blue tubes better in the coulters?
This is near me, I think I want it, though I'd much prefer a 13.1" scope.

I responded yesterday to an ad on Ottawa Kijiji, and I think I convinced the seller to keep the telescope - the ad is gone today. They were selling one of the ubiquitous orange tube "Carl Wetzlar" Tanzutsu-sourced refractors that Eaton's sold in Canada. Complete with a basic EQ mount, they were asking $25.00 CAD. I used to own one, 60x900, and despite the reputation of < Z >, it was a more than adequate performer for what it was. I noticed that the seller's scope was larger than my old one, and they confirmed it was 60mm x 1000mm. The scope had been handed down to them, and the seller said that there was a problem with the objective.
I thought about it, and decided not to buy it as it overlapped with my existing 60x910 refractor, but continued a short conversation with the seller. They asked me whether I thought it was worth having it serviced or trying to fix, I told them that while Tanzutsu isn't one of the most highly regarded Japanese optic providers, they can be quite capable for backyard astronomy. I also told them that the problems with the objective might be caused by the cell being installed backwards, or having disassembled and reassembled incorrectly. The seller said that they had considered asking Focus Scientific to take a look at it, and I agreed that they would be able to tell if the objective was incorrectly assembled or installed. It looks like I convinced them to keep the scope rather than sell it, as the ad has now been withdrawn.

This is one of my favorite Edmund catalog covers, 1967 and the 25th anniversary for Edmund.
Great content too:

I need to check craigslist more often. The $100 for the 10" one is tempting(I emailed the guy). The $950 is not, even if I could talk her down some. The 13.1" one looks like its had quite a few improvements, looks like new mirror cell, counterweights, maybe alt bearings, maybe a new focuser, and hand truck.

Hey does that look like a repair on the mirror cell?

I don't think masking tape would fix much if it was cracked. Worth asking about though.

It looks more like an orientation marker, so when the cell is removed, it can easily be replaced in the same orientation.

What a DEAL!
It looks like it only needs a couple of straps. Heck, I'd grab that just to hold it for Stew at cost (if he wanted another Cave).
If that were local - I'd cringe at the idea of a novice trying to do something with it. At this point I'd honestly pass on picking it up for myself, even if a no brainer.
My plate is just too full.
Ad says OBO too.

The blue Coulter dobs are generally a little better than the red ones.
I had a red tube 8 - it was actually nice.
One of three 13.1s I've had was a total dud. One was average - very nice for low power, but meh for planets. One was amazingly good.
I haven't had a 10", but understand they follow the 2 out of three will be average to poor optically.
That said - $100 for this scope is a steal, and it comes with a nice Ortho -
I'd grab it if it were close to me!

Looks like it is headed my way. Take a cosmetically challenged Dynamax wedge/pyramid tripod and drastically shorten the legs? fun stuff

Also, there's a Celestar 8 for sale a few miles from me on CL , but since it's a Fastar version, it's not quite classic yet. So PM me if you want the link.

Thanks Ben.
I did get it! Some spiders to clean out. The mirror did form an image just when in the daytime. But I'll have to star test it when it clears up. Also being lazy, any idea of the focal length? It's an odyssey compact 10.1
It came with a repurposed binocular eyepieces as well. The Coulter branded Orthos made in japan: any idea on who made them, or how good?
I might try to 3d print a proper mirror cell. I already found such a project from Dale Eason. I'll have to do some reading.

"Also being lazy, any idea of the focal length?"
Those were usually f/4.5 scopes, so for a 10.1 that is a focal length of 45.5 inches of 1155 mm.
