Horsehead and Flame Nebulas, IC 434 and NGC 2024. ASI 183MM Pro camera on WO ZS81 APO scope with flattener, on CEM40-EC mount. 13x300s + 20x600s, for total of 4.42hr integration time with average guiding error 0.5". Astronomik 6nm Ha filter.

I am loving this new hobby - astrophotography from the balcony of our house in the city - and have been learning so much from so many people here in the Forum. Thank you very much, I am now addicted to this!

Clear skies.

That is a wonderful first image!

Thank you! We only started talking images in the first week of March, one month ago. This has been a very intense and fast paced learning curve, but great fun.

That's a lot better than my first attempt at the horsehead. Hopefully I'll have clear skies when it comes back into view from my backyard so I can give it another go.

I thoroughly enjoy a nice monochrome image, and this region is the perfect target for an image composed of hydrogen-alpha data. Very nice framing and composition. I'll echo others in this thread: your first image is orders of magnitude better than my own first image.

Hi Jose,
This picture is astonishing. It may be a first AP but I bet your aren't new to photography. Are you?

Thank you very much, I appreciate the kind works. This is indeed a hobby that requires much attention to detail and I feel very fortunate to be able to learn from so many people in this forum. And I love black and white photography, anyway.

It's what I started with as a boy. My father bought an enlarger and the gear to develop black and white film. I spent many hours in the makeshift darkroom (aka the upstairs bathroom) where I had the chemicals laid out in the bathtub and hung the prints to dry from clothesline :)

Hi jerr,

Thank you, I am glad that you liked the image. I am very experienced in photography, with many years as a serious amateur, a few exhibits and participation in books, including for Leica (my equipment). AP was the natural evolution for me now that I am stuck at home most of the time due to the current pandemic and lack of vaccines in Europe. So, a couple of telescopes on my balcony seemed appropriate! :)

That story is very familiar to me... I did exactly the same for many years! A wonderful way to learn.

Seeing things in this photo I haven’t noticed in so many images before it.

I’m in awe... and it’s b&w.

Thank you very much! I find this region fascinating and thus invested significant care in the processing of the images. Furthermore, I also invested much time and effort to prepare the master calibration frames. Attention to detail paid off. I will soon take RGB subs and then will combine everything into a color image, using this Ha information mostly (but not solely) as the Luminance channel.

Thank you Jose. I was about to quit AP if that was different.
