Dear all,

despite having read many threads on the web, I cannot figure out what are the main differences between the versions 1 and 2 of Losmandy's Gemini Gotos?

Looking for second hand G11, at least in France, it seems there is a 1000€ price difference between the ones equiped with Gemini 2 instead of Gemini 1. To understand whether it is worht the difference for my use of it, I need first to understand which functionalities or maintenability I might loose, while choosing a Gemini 1.

If anyone knows, she or he is welcome!

Clear skies.

Laurent.

As far as I know there is very little difference in functionality.  The main difference is in the hand controller (goes from simple buttons on Gemini 1 to touchscreen on Gemini 2).

If you want full details you should ask over on the Losmandy group:  https://groups.io/g/...dy_users/topics

Hello Laurent,

The primary differences are

1- Tucked high torque servo motors >  Stronger motors.

2- spring loaded one piece worm gears > Better tracking and many owners will upgrade this on their Gen1's

3- upgraded Gemini 2 computer > more modern

Being a member of the Losmandy users forum on io,  "Join the forum"

There are many Losmandy owners in Europe that enjoy their Gen1's and the Gen2's some of the Gen1's are thirty years old and still going strong.

HAPPY SKIES AND KEEP LOOKING UP Jethro

P.S.The Losmandy G11G is the last GEM that I will ever need.

Not all true. Tucked in motors and spring loaded worm gear are very recent upgrades and many Gemini II's do not have them. If you like to observe and do not wish to run your mount with a separate computer the Gemini II is well worth the difference.

Just to add to the last comment - since Losmandy mounts are upgradable, there will be many Losmandy owners that have upgraded their mounts to the Gemini 2 system, so these will have the old two piece worms, and the motors will not be tucked in. I recently upgraded my 492 digital drive G11 mount to Gemini 2. The upgrade did involve replacing the old motors with newer high torque motors, and installing new gearboxes, but the gearbox simply attached to the Oldham coupler on the worms. The Gemini 2 system does allow you to use the telescope without a computer which could be a benefit for visual only.

thanks Lola Bruce and Iantaylor for the additional information.

Makes things even trickier to pick one on the second hand market.

It will be dedicated to an obsevatory with computer. So, for that purpose, both versions seems suitable.

However I am more interested in the spring loaded worm  if it actually reduces the backlash.

Are the springloaded worms available for both Dec and Ra axis?

Yes they are available for both the RA & DEC axis on the G11.

The Gemini-II is significantly more user-friendly than the Gemini I.

Yes you can get these from Losmandy but I think at the moment there is a waiting list for the spring loaded one piece worms (I know this because I'm on the wait list!). You only really need the spring loaded one piece worm on the RA axis, I wouldn't bother replacing the DEC worm.

Good to know about that waiting list.

By the way does someone know when the Losmandy's springloaded worms have been launched on the market?
