Hello All,

Well, first off this my first post, and also I am a total beginner. The more I read on gear etc., the less I seem to know...hopefully that will change over time!

I am located near Kobe, Japan, and a longtime resident here, from the PNW/Oregon though.  A few months ago I came across a vintage Takahashi TS-65-800mm that was complete and in pretty good condition. Honestly I had no clue about the brand, but loved the build and obvious quality of the parts at first site. I would set it up on my balcony, mostly for lunar viewing. Some dings aside, and a couple spots on the lens, the TS-65 is in mostly good condition and a blast to use.

That spurned me to look around for some other gear and this past week I picked up a near mint condition FC-60, with clamshell, 5x25 finder etc. As you can see, the only real wear is on the clamshell and the scope/lens itself is mint. On separate local auctions I also picked up a vari-extender as well as a OR 40mm eyepiece. Debating to hunt down a 1.25" back, as I have a nice little collection of 965 eye pieces....I did pay a little more than I budgeted, but when receiving the scope it was obviously in mint condition and I am a happy.

Unfortunately its rainy season here, and when we have some clear nights I look forward to taking it up to some dark areas nearby for better viewing.

On a side note I have a habit of hunting down old gear. For some reason sellers on yahoo auctions Japan or similar sites sometimes just list items as "telescope", without the make/model....so some deals can be had. However the used market for Tak`s here is robust, and they seem to hold their value.

My main concern is the objective/lens coatings. I have seen many Tak`s with deteriorated optics, like mold etc.

--Any tips on how to prevent this?

Japanese summers are hot/humid, so I don't imaging that helps.

Cheers!

That’s an awesome pair of scopes to start with. Is the FC 60 on the TS mount in that picture or is that something else? I love the little high end Japanese equatorial mounts. The Vixen 36.4mm to 1.25” back will work on both Taks and should be about 1500 yen. I also know Carton made a 36.4mm diagonal which would screw directly into the drawtube and could be used with your 40mm Ortho and other 36.4mm eyepieces or with either a 1.25” or .965” back. I messed up and forgot to bid on a nice 60mm f/6 carton that came with one. As for mold, keep it in a drier place, give it periodic sunlight, and use dessicants. If there’s already fungal growth, there are a lot of people here who can give advice on cleaning it.

Thank you Viking.

Yes, to be honesty I felt a little odd dropping this much money on scopes...my main hobby is cycling, and riding up on a 10k new bike if you are a newbie is not always "cool".

Anyhow, Yes, the FC-60 is on a TS mount and also the clamshell. I also have an older Vixen SP mount as well, if I could eventually find something more portable for the FC-60 it would be great.

Thank you for the advice on the Carton. I will keep an eye out for a 36.4mm diagonal, which seems like an easier option in the field.

Will do on the storage, I have already purchased dessicants. The 60 is clean, but the old TS has a little bit of fungus....

Ex-Oregonian, eh? I've been surprised fungus hasn't been a problem for my gear in the PNW. They say in the summertime Oregonians don't tan... they rust. No fungus among us?

Ha, I've seen this one in auction.

Put them inside a container box full of silica gels, tape one inside the cap.

The FC-60 is truly a wonderful scope.I enjoyed one for several years and just recently gave myself permission to pass it along to another worthy owner is is truly having a blast with it. It packs a lot of power into a very small package. When you bring it in, never put the lens cap on for a couple of hours and don’t put in a case until the next day. Always store it with a desiccant not far from the objective lens in its case. And every so often, expose it to direct sunlight for an hour or two, (they are dandy solar scopes). Other than that, enjoy the sharp, crisp, high-contrast, color-perfect views.

I am the lucky new owner of the Tak FC60 Terra speaks of and I never expose it or my FC76dcu to moisture and always check their objective lenses to make sure they are clear before putting them away after use. You will really enjoy your FC60 for all types of observing sessions, long or short!! I use mine for white light solar observing and find it especially handy for this task!!

Thank you Terra, Barbie, much appreciated.
Quick question, did you update your FC-60 to accept 1.25” diagonals/eye pieces?

No, it already has a 1.25" focused.

Oregon weather isn't too bad...seems to rain a lot less than 10-20 years ago!

Its the humidity here in JP thats a drag! Portland summers are great...

Just got a pristine FC-60 Serial No 93057, and have yet to be able to observe with it due to PNW weather. It has that classic Takahashi look and is beautiful to just look at sitting on the table ;-)

FC-60.jpg

First I'll use it visually on my Unitron 128 GEM - it does fit the cradle.

I will likely end up using as a guide scope for a TOA-150, but I'd also like to use it for wide field imaging as well. Looking for input on a suitable focal reducer...

Finally have some nice weather to set up the new rig and do a preliminary as-hoc solar observation with an old float-glass filter (I'll get a Baader filter or Herschel wedge for it soon):

Still in all I must say I was very impressed with image quality. And while some Takahashi purists might object, the classic-on-classic scope & mount looks pretty-not-bad. waytogo.gif
