I recently picked up a Meade Starfinder 16 inch EQ with a Magellan II control system, which was still in it's box, only missing it's installation guide, as far as I can tell. If anyone happens to have one, even the one for the 6/8/10 version, I'd really appreciate some pictures.

Thanks in advance.

Here's what I have:

Meade 16" Starfinder manual:

https://deepskies.co...F_16_Manual.pdf

I have some Magellan II manuals from the LX50 - perhaps they might help?

https://deepskies.co...AGII-Manual.pdf

https://deepskies.co...II-Addendum.pdf

https://deepskies.co...nstallation.pdf

Maybe something in those will help?

Clear skies!

Rick

Thanks for the response, Rick.

That installation guide could work, as I've figured out how most of the hardware goes on, except for the internals in the RA motor housing. That might have the most crossover. I'm going to be cracking that open today, so we'll see if things look right.

Thanks for the help.

I found someone that has one on astromart, but I don't have a membership. Would anyone with a membership be able to connect us?

There should be mounting holes in the RA housing for the parts assuming its the correct model. The actual encoder parts are the same as the Magellan I system so you have to remove the RA drive to mount the encoder gear on the RA shaft and the CWs to mount the DEC encoder.

Thanks for the response,

When I opened it up, I saw those holes, and I have the relevant gear and encoder. The Magellan II comes with a new motor-control board to replace the existing one, and has two 4-pin connectors, one for motor control, one for the encoder, but not labeled. The existing RA motor has that interface, and is quite heavily geared down, so I'd assume it's kept for precise tracking and slewing, but I don't know, so I'm trying to find the instructions. Unfortunately, it seems the installation manual for the LX50 doesn't have an equivalent process, so I'm stuck trying to find the Starfinder one, which doesn't seem to exist online, especially not the 16 inch version. Of course, the one part that can fry everything is the one thing without labels.

Thanks again

I had a look around and I found this site:

http://www.skymtn.co...tarFdr_Magl.htm

About 1/2 way down is information particular to the Starfinder Dob and the Magellan II - maybe you'll find a gem in there?

Otherwise, I think you're right - I don't the the installation manual pertaining to the Starfinder 16" Dob exists on the Internet. You'll likely have to try and buy one from somewhere.

Let us know how you make out - hopefully you get it going.

Clear skies!

Rick

Sorry for the late response, but thank you for the link.

Sadly, I didn't find it there, but there is a lot of other information on the scope there, which is always good to have. I think I may be able to ask some people who know stuff about PCBs, as one channel is motor control, and the other is sensor reading, so maybe the transistors and things can be deciphered. This does force me to learn the sky a bit, so it's not all that bad.

The last required part for use is the secondary mirror holder, which should get here this weekend, so I'll be posting pictures of it soon in a new topic. Unfortunately, the AstroSystems holder is a bit bigger than the tube was designed for, so I had to do some strange modifications, but I'm still happy with how it looks. Not that the exterior matters if it still functions fine as a telescope, though.

Anyway, thanks everyone who commented here, the help is greatly appreciated. I'll post here if I ever figure the Magellan out.

Nate
