Now that my encoder is replaced I need to address that reset to factory settings that the Meade rep. had me perform as we were troubleshooting the problem.  (Note: $499 plus shipping for repair at Meade versus $60 including shipping for TWO replacement encoders from US Digital.)  Anyway, everything works again but I now have to perform that above tasks on the mount.  Is there a particular order to Tran, PEC and Drift Align which is best?  I guess specifically I mean if I do that in the wrong order am I degrading the result obtain during one of the other tasks.  Thanks in advance for your comments.

I assume by 'train drive' you mean star alignment. If not, then nevermind...

If so, the order should be:

Drift Align (or use SharpCap Pro and possibly save hours )

Star align

PEC (mount needs to be guiding to train PEC)

Train Drives first.

Train drive, then drift align, then pec with a couple updates.

Thanks all.  I knew I'd get quick answers.  We should rewrite the Meade manuals!!

Gday Don

As noted

First thing is to "Train Drives"

This measures the backlash in the gearing and is used in Gotos.

Technically, you can now train PEC if you want ( ie before final drift align )

as the PEC training process will remove any drift from the model.

I agree with the others tho, get a good "mechanical" align first

and the remaining errors are less to deal with.

Reading the manual it looks like train drive is for Alt/Az mount. Does it also work when my mount is polar mounted?

Gday Don

Drive "training" applies in both Polar and AltAz

( for polar, it mainly assists in DEC guiding )

That said, Meade have 2 ways to train

Terrestrial   or Polar and tracking.

The latter doesnt work well for RA due to timing errors and PE in the geartrain.

As such, if you are polar and on a wedge,

what you do is simply tell the mount it is AltAz ( it doesnt know any better wink.gif  )

Pick a terrestrial target that is visible when the OTA is between +-30 deg in DEC

Do the train procedure, the reset the mount to Polar mode and align.

I’m excited to report that using Train Drive eliminated all of the weird lurches the scope was doing after replacing the bad encoder. Must have been gear slop. I was REALLY excited to do a daylight GOTO to Venus that put the object in the FOV of my finder without yet having done a sync to a star in the sky.
