Gday Andrew Oz

I have finally stripped and overhauled My LX90 Mount ,and cleaned the Optical sensor , there was some slight misting on the disc ,  lubricated and reassembled.

I still suspect that it is not as accurate in locating as it should be ,by doing Dummy indoors sessions, the weather here in SouthWest England has been dreadful for weeks with cloud & Rain.

So ,while waiting I have Been trying to Download the Meade Software Update into the Handset through the Meade 505 cable and Special Adapter from the USB 3 Port on my computer . I have No serial 9 pin ,only USB`s

I have the Meade displayed  Ready to go for the AUDIOSTAR  Handset but it does not recognise either the Handset or the Internet.

So , what am I not doing right Please?

Thanks for All your previous Help , Brian Banbury.  England

Hi brian and welcome to CN and another Meade owner to the next I guess!

However an firmware update is only generally required if you do have any pointing and goto accuracy.so if there is an initial problem occurred it may not be necessary what’s the scopes age!?

Gday Brian

Need more info

What app are you using to load the firmware???

Meades ASU or StarPatch.

Both apps can connect to the internet to download the required files

( even if the USB to rs232 adapter isnt working )

but i strongly suggest using StarPatch, and the patched A1F7 firmware.

After that, the next test is to ensure your USB2ser adapter has a valid driver loaded

as if you havent done that, it wont detect anything.

Soooo, if you plug in the adapter and open "Device mangler" in the windows menus

does it show the device has been detected???

Note: there really is no point in attempting a firmware update if it’s simperly not required if the scopes pointing accuracy, is working well.as your just doing this for the sake of it,anyway.however i do agree if the LX90 was having initial issues with the 2000,s or April 2019 gps rollover bug an firmware update of some description may be needed.the first route I would take if there’s any issues anyway, is drive training, calibration of the drives is enough to tweek for more pointing accuracy.and lastly I cannot help feeling that some users to get confused in the firmware of being some kind of upgrade it is,nt.

Gday , Andrew and Super Nova,

Many Thanks for that nice welcome!

I am using the Autostar Version 6   and I just get the panel up. I have looked at the Device manager for device detected, but it does not show it.

The Lead has a chip for driving ,it states.

I am installing the Mount back on the Tripod today and with high pressure coming in , the skies should clear in the next few days and I will try it out properly.

Thanks again for your comments ,and I will be back.  regards  Brian Banbury, England

P.S.  What is the difference between Firmware and Software , I am not sure!

Gday Brian

I am using the Autostar Version 6

I strongly suggest using StarPatch instead.

http://www.stargps.ca/downloads.htm

It is free for private use and much more robust then Meades ASU.

I have looked at the Device manager for device detected, but it does not show it.

Then you wont get any further until it is detected as a proper port.

Can you open device manager and then plug the cable in.

It should get detected and possibly show with an error warning.

Looking at the details for the device, you should be able to find out the manufacturer.

Do you have a link to the cable website??? That might get some clues.

What is the difference between Firmware and Software

(Very) Loosely, firmware is like the operating system ( ie loaded then left alone )

and software is like the programs you constantly load/remove/use.

ie For a PC, the operating system is "Firmware" and Meades ASU is "Software"

In the Meade scopes, you load the operating system once but dont then load any

other software onto it, so its more like firmware than software.
