I have two Meade Autostar hand control units #494 and 497. I got them with my two ETX scopes. i.e., 494 with ETX70AT and 497 with ETX90EC. Is it OK to plug in 494 in place of 497?

Thanks

Prasad

Gday Prasad

Short answer is "normally yes"

Plug the 494 in and if your mount appears as one of the options

just select it and calibrate the motors and it should run happily.

You might also want to do a drive train to improve goto accuracy as well.

G'day Andrew

Thank you for the quick reply. I will do it and see what happens. The display on my 497 is not working and I have not succeeded so far to fix it. That is why I thought of trying my ETX90 with 494 borrowed from ETX70.

What do you mean by drive train? Can you please point me to any document so I can try to follow it?

Thank you

Prasad

The display on my 497 is not working and I have not succeeded so far to fix it.

If it is just a dead screen, and it is a later model with a 14 wire ribbon connector,

then a user recently found a drop in replacement

Have a squizz at

What do you mean by drive train?

Its in the Meade Manual. ( or 497 menus as   >>Telescope>Train Drive )

The process basically measures the backlash in each geartrain

so it can be allowed for on reversing.

Hi Andrew

This morning I tried plugging in the 494 into the ETX-90EC. It seems to work but I did not go further. The main point was to test if the ETX base unit was also defective. It looks OK. So I am now left with only the task of fixing the 497.

I looked at the pointer link you sent me. It leads me to an Alibaba.com page. It does not seem to be an easy to work page, it is apparently meant for large volume buyers. The LCD display is not listed on Aliexpress or on Amazon. I now have to see if there is an easy way to get just one (or two) display by some means.

Thanks

Prasad

Gday Prasad

I looked at the pointer link you sent me. It leads me to an Alibaba.com page.

Look at the later manufacturer specific link i gave

ie the https://wandisplay............

enter the "WC1602T7DVN6G" no into the search box

This Manufacturer specific site lists several links to the Unit and sells in min units of 1 or 2 ( but high shipping )

Contact the rep Coco Liu via their chat and you can get all the details you need.

OK, I just did that. I had to create an account with Alibaba which I was hoping to avoid. Then I was able to send an email to Coco Liu. I hope it will work out soon.

BTW, I did not fully test the 494 controller. The display on 494 came on and asked me some question something like - if I was connecting it to an ETX? I was not sure what I had to do. Also, I did not want its original settings changed. It working well with my ETX70 scope. I don't use the ETX70 much though.

Thanks again for your help

Prasad

G'day Andrew

I noticed the display as listed is without the backlight. Is that OK? Can I re-use the old backlight system again with a new display? Coco :Liu asked me to confirm this.

Thank you

Prasad

Hi Andrew

Just realized that this display would not work for my 497. Mine needs a 24 pin ribbon cable and this one has only 14 pins. My 497 must be older style. I am back to square one.

I may probably look for a 497 on CN classifieds.

Yep

Yep. Meade use 4 red LEDs to light up the white diffuser to provide backlighting

OK, in that case, someone found a replacement  for that unit several years ago,

It was always the 14 wire unit they couldnt find.

Need to dig through my notes as to what they found

but if you use the search function in this forum ( use "Optrex" as the search )

you will get hits to several threads on what people found.

My notes indicate it was an OPTREX DMC-50747NF-AK

but i cant confirm where that originated yet.
