I was using my ETX LS8 tonight and couldn't get it to align. The firmware is the latest version, 1.6e. When the scope is in auto align and slews to find north, it is about 30 degrees to the right of true north. When the scope goes to find an alignment star, same thing about 30 degrees to the right of the alignment star. The same thing happens when in a manual two star Alt-Az alignment (which then won't align). This occurs whether the GPS function is turned on or off. Any ideas on how to correct this? Is there any way to override the scope looking for north every time and do a manual two star alignment? Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Denny.

Gday DennyD

IIRC, you can go into the menus and turn AutoAlign off.

You then get to choose the align methood you want

but are still limited to the stars it lists.

If your mount is constantly 30deg off, you may need to do a factory calibration

of the Level and North sensors for your location

It uses a special boot menu, but is very simple if you know the local magnetic north

and have a spirit level.

Thank you Andrew. How do I find the special boot menu on my controller, and what procedure do I follow? Denny.

Gday Denny

How do I find the special boot menu on my controller,

ref these

https://www.cloudyni...52#entry8981026

and what procedure do I follow?

Start the level North calibrate.

The mount will do its stuff and point Level and North using its sensors.

You then use the handbox to set the OTA true level ( with a spirit level )

and pointing to local magnetic North  ( using a compass )

Keep the compass away from the scope etc so it gets the true magnetic north.

Done.

Thank you Andrew. Can I do this calibration inside the house?

Yep, but if you have large metal objects out where you normally use the mount

it might pay to do the North caibration out there.

Gday Andrew. Forgot to ask, while I'm in the factory calibration menu, is there any way to choose the alignment stars myself? Would power lines affect finding north?

Gday Denny

The factory calibration doesnt use any stars.

It uses its sensors to set the OTA magnetic North and Level

and you correct that using a spirit level and a compass.

Power lines may affect it, depending on how close they are,

but thats hard to prove.

Gday Andrew. Went out today and bought a small spirit level, and camping compass (in a plastic case). Going to calibrate the level north on my LS8 tomorrow. At what point do I enter the code to go to factory alignment after starting the scope? My scope was "bricked" when I bought it, and I got a copy of a mini SD card with firmware version 1.6e to install. Any idea why the calibration would be off? Thank you. Denny

Gday Denny

As per the linked threads

boot the scope and just press the 9 button every second or so

When the handset says enter code, enter 752

The new menu will then be visible

Any idea why the calibration would be off?

I have no idea of the details of the LS firmware.

I killed my setup once when testing ( no idea how i did it )

but maybe on reloading, it over rode the data set in the factory.

That or you have a large magnetic anomaly near where you set up.

Gday Andrew. Just got finished setting the factory calibration for both north and level of my LS8. Also calibrated the Az-Alt drive, plus the finder center. Will let you know. Thank you again! Have you given though about writing a brief trouble shooting guide for the LS scopes? Denny.
