Many of the classic Celestron scopes have the circle V logo on them, showing that they were made by Vixen. But the orange labels will say that they were made in Torrance Ca. by Celestron International. So who gets the recognition for these scopes, Japan or the USA.

I had two Vixen made scopes on Vixen  Polaris mounts. The labels on both scopes were clear, made in Japan for Celestron or words to the same effect. Neither one said or implied US manufacture or that Celestron was the manufacturer. Japanese optics had some cachet. Both were garage sale finds with black tubes not orange or white and I do not know when they were made.

I'm pretty sure the Celestron Cometron Series OTAs that don't have the (V) on the label are either lower-grade Vixen, or a "partner" Japan maker, like Dai-ichi Kogaku...

I've had three Celestron branded black tube scopes. Two 80mm f/11.4 refractors and one 150mm f/5 Newtonian and all three had stickers that read "made for Celestron in Japan." One of the 80mm scopes was called the Firstscope 80 and the only place Vixen was stamped was down inside a casting that created the scope's alt/az mount's saddle. That is the only case of the three that had the word Vixen.

Hrmm.

I currently have 2 Celestron branded (made in Japan) scopes - both are black tubes.

C-4.5 reflector - sticker says:

Made for Celestron in Japan

Celestron International, Torrance CA  ---- then the little Circle V

Celestron Firstscope 80 (80/F11 refractor) is similar,

Made for Celestron in Japan

Sticker is a little different, but still has Celestron International, Torrance CA

Then in the lower right corner is the Circle V.

These are black stickers with orange font, if that means anything.

I can get some pics if anyone needs them.

My thought, optics built by Vixen in Japan - stickers apllied in the US by Celestron.

Not only the optics, but the whole scope was made by Vixen.Their relationship included Vixen selling Celestrons in Japan.

I love those 80s and 90s Vixen catalogs. I have one from 1991 on my computer and it too has the orange Celestron SCTs The Celestron SPC6 that I owned in the 90s was the painted black Celestron version of the scope the young women is posing with at the top of your 1985 catalog.

And Meade SCTs were paired with much rarer squarish Meade mounts which I think were produced in California.

The "BlockHead" EQs used by Meade were made in Japan by Mizar.  Earliest ones I've seen are white, and paired with the Mizar Altair Casses.  Some CN Owners haven't been impressed with them.  RARE are the 2080s with that Meade / Mizar label on them -- for our potential Collectors...
