Does anyone know who made the 10" Deep Space Observer reflecting telescopes? Looking for some parts for it, and it looks like the base, focuser, and finder are identical to the components on the Zhumell, and the side bearings look identical to an Orion. TIA.

The company was created by Dale Penkala and was called "DBA Astronomy Products LLC."  DBA began in 2006 and dissolved in 2009.

DBA scopes were very similar to those sold by Hardin (e.g. Deep Space Hunter).  They were almost certainly sourced from the same manufacturer(s), and they even shared the same lettering/font on their tube graphics.

Best wishes.

Dan

Thanks Dan! This helps wit the history of the telescope. It needs new altitude bearings. The old ones have gouges in them. I'm trying to fix this up for a guy just getting into astronomy. He received this scope from a friend and wants to get it put back together.

Yes, the Meade DS-16 came on an equatorial mount. I still have my DS16 from the mid '80's. This scope that I am trying to get back together for another guy is a 10" dob.

Would anyone know where to get the side bearings from? They look like Orion, but not sure if they would be an exact fit.

Deep Space Observers were modified GSO Dobs.  Zhumell and Apertura are made by GSO as well as some Orion scopes.

They use two basic types of bearings.. Are yours like these?

Yes, Jon, they are exactly like these! Thanks! Maybe they will sell them separately. I believe that Orion will only sell parts to the original owner. I'll contact Apertura to see what they say. Thanks again!

One of the common complaints about Orion and others is that they are not in the parts business. Only fully assembled scopes are sold. If you are the original owner with proof of purchase, they often will rob parts off new scopes and write them off as "good customer service." Unless the side bearings are trashed, I would try to repair them if your can. Our members may be able to help. Good luck! waytogo.gif

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! Making great progress on repairing the telescope. I am in need of another part that I am having a difficult time finding. There is a large fender washer that goes underneath the adjustment knob for the base. It looks like an ordinary fender washer with the exception that the washer that I need is slightly concave. Does anyone have a source for this? It appears that this washer must be concave to put pressure on the base to adjust how easy the base will move in azimuth. TIA.
