Wooden legs on Ebay; for Unitron aficionados or pirates, take your pick...

Bizarre, probably entirely useless, trashed and overpriced wollensak-mirrortel-80-f14-57 on Astromart

I always thought these Optical Craftsman were nice

1971     50 years old.......................

https://www.cloudyni...ting-telescope/

I would pay that for just the OTA and use it on my broken RG mount. No way i want a 8" on a 1" shaft mount.

How do they compare to a Cave or Star-Liner?

I really like it. Too bad there's no EPs, no Accessories, no Counter Weight, and no CW shaft. frown.gif

I could be wrong, but this Yamatar looks like an Alt-Az mount to me...

That’s an interesting piece. It would be equally interesting if someone acquired and restored it. Buyer beware tho, as it does look like a heavy hog! I wonder if it was military or built for a US Govt agency like early NASA or the old AEC. Wollensak in the past was a well respected US maker or camera lenses and optics. They were also an important government contractor during WWII. Since this is a Maksutov telescope, I would imagine it was built in the 1950s or maybe 1960s.

It looks nice to me too.  No mention of problematic tantalum caps being replaced, so I'm guessing it needs to be done.  Even with no tripod, shipping estimate is $414.86 to my front door....ouch.  Probably a lot less to the west coast.

It's Bill Vorce, so I would assume it's not a hunk of junk and if you asked he could probably answer.

I bought a new 1969 6" f/8 Optical Craftsmen using most of my savings when I was in high school.  I wish I still had it.  To my then 16-year old eyes, the views were comparable to a 6" Cave that another member of my astronomy club had.

It's an EQ.  Lafayette & Micronta sold the same kit with their brands on the labels...

Saw this one this morning. Local to me, so I was interested. I don't need it at all, but looks nice. Considering it for my daughter's friend to borrow and possibly keep. Seems like it's $75 too high. True?

What's your opinion on price? Worth something close to that to give/ loan to a teen?

I would do $75-$100 depending on condition.

My opinion?  It is an older scope, and one that doesn't come up very often, if ever.  I believe that it would be a good scope and looks to be in VG condition.  Being a (sears) Tower, and the box, I would guess it is from the early 60's, and should give pretty good views.  It is kinda cool looking with that color.

The seller came down to $150, but I think a little less would be better.  Somewhere between $75 to $100, and if you really wanted it maybe about $125.

It would might make a good G&G for anyone, and for a younger person it should serve very well, maybe wetting their appetite for more.

If were about 75-100, and local to me, I think I would get it for the nostalgia.

I had hoped that Clamchip would chime in because it looks like his scope, or the one he had.  That backyard view looks like his or is very similar. smile.gif

I apologize for the repeat , that will not happen again ...

No worries at all, sir!  These sorts of repeats - the listings for obscure rarities or curiosities - are worth an "oops" re-posting, now and again.  The more obscure and rare the scope, the easier it is to "oops" and repeat it.

Besides - I had to dive in and make sure my own memory was still working well. grin.gif

Best wishes.

Dan

From the mount I'd say more like mid 60s to 70s.

And yes Towa.

The most interesting component to me is the finder with the diagonal.

I'm really a refractor guy so don't remember if that's common on these 4.5" scopes

My old man grew up in that area. LOL His old club has an observatory complex not far from there, too. Fortunately, he has no interest in those scopes so we won't be going on any road trips! WHEW!

Thanks.  I contacted the seller.  Unless someone beats me to it, and they might, I am going to connect with them.  If it is decent shape, I will see where we can land.

That is my front yard! and that's my telescope!

If it helps her out why not.
