Does the Autostar 497 (LXD75) display go dark when the 505 serial cable is plugged in to the computer? Maybe it should? I don't know.....

Kind regards  /Lasse

Meade did not design interfaces to be hot plugged. All cables should be connected before power is applied.

The #505 must be pluged into the Autostar controller not one of the AUX plugs on the mount, when it is pluged into one of the AUX plugs the display goes dark and this will lead to damage!

Thanks for your reply Piet. Yes of course, the 505 cable is plugged in on the small RJ on the 497 controller, not the AUX port.  Regards Lasse

Gday RoadAstro

The 497 should not go dark when you plug in a 505 cable.

The interesting bit is the 505 cable comes into the Hbx and into a max232 converter

to change the signals from +/-8V rs232 to 0-5V TTL

The -ve voltage pump pin on the max232 is used to bias the screen contrast

so if the max232 is misbehaving, then it might cause it to dim

but the text should stil be there.

If you look at the screen at a grazing angle, you can see if the text is still there.

Thank you Andrew, that cleared up some questions I had. You only get bits and pieces of information here and there, so nice when you get straight answers smile.gif  Cheers / Lasse

Gday Lasse

Just found my HandCAD sketch i made a while ago of whats in my 497.

The general circuit used tocontrol contrast is identical to whats in the ASII handset

and the 497EP handsets.

Also, as a second test, it might pay to try using a remote handbox utility

to see if the HBx is working "properly" behind the scenes
