When I boot up the ETX70, the Autostar display either shows nothing, or gibberish.

Pressing the speed control, Dec and RA buttons function.

ive had a few that did this. Is this something that can be fixed with a software upgrade, or is it a physical problem?

im not good with computers and don’t have the cables to connect to a laptop.

any and all help appreciated!

This is normally a sign the LCD screen is dying, or its ribbon connector is losing contact.

Lots of threads recently on this topic but first test is to open the handset and remove/clean the ribbon cable.

It uses a locking type connector so unlock it first and the ribbon will slip out.

Just clean the contacts and put it back together.

If it still wont work, then you may need a new LCD.

There are 2 types, a 14 wire and a 24 wire ribbon.

If its the 14 wire, there is a drop in replacement found recently ( search the forum for "Formike" )

The 24 pin version is a bit harder.

Thank you! I think you are on the right track, the cable jacket pulled out of the handset. When I pushed it back in, the handset works intermittently.

I will try cleaning the connector. How do you get the halves of the handset apart? Do they split at the seem, or are there screws under the labels?

The handset is held together with 4 small screws.

It is also a light clip fit so a fingernail in the side normally pops it open after the screws are out.

Watch out for the red lense at the top as it drops out easily.

A bit of maskingtape will hold it whilst you much around.

Thank you very much. I’ll give it a try!
