LIGO has real challenges in this regard.  They are measuring the difference in length of the two light paths via the interference of the two light paths.  Because of the weakness of the gravitational waves, the difference is less than 1/1000 the width of a proton.  I am surprised than any of the physicists and technicians are even allowed to take a breath.

I am surprised than any of the physicists and technicians are even allowed to take a breath.  

They are only allowed to inhale while near the equipment. If they have to exhale they must first retreat to at least 1 kilometer distance.
