I blackened the edges of the secondary mirror with Rustoleum Chalkboard. Should I let it off-gas beyond the manufacturer's 24 hours drying time, and for how long, before putting the scope back together?

You don’t say what kind of scope this is but if we are talking about an open Newtonian why would it matter?

What tturtle said.
Cover the primary, install the secondary and leave the scope unsealed for a few days.

Or put it in a toaster oven at 150 degrees for a couple hours.

Similarly, if it is still warm where you live, put it in a car, in the driveway, with windows rolled up. The greenhouse effect raises the temp inside the car to way above ambient. After a few days, the smell from the painted object should have lessened.

Thanks, that's a great idea. I'm in California, so this will work nicely.

The scope is a Newtonian, but I like to keep the cap closed unless I'm actually using it. Besides, no rush putting it together right now, between the smoke and the moon.
