There is a new CEM70 firmware out. Ioptron does not detail what has changed in the new one. Has anyone upgraded the firmware and any issues?

I noticed that today also, but didn't see much in the way of details other than some changes to accommodate a new handset.  I think I'll hold off until we find out more.

Here's another thread about it.  Not much useful info.

New firmware and Commander 7.0 went up on October 16th for the 70 and 120, so I'm not sure what that thread is about (?). FWIW, several people have done the upgrade and reported it as trouble free on the iOptron user group. I'll be updating my CEM120EC2 this weekend weather permitting and I'm hoping that now I will no longer see any DEC oscillations. The new firmware / driver also now permits custom tracking rates. So, I'll finally be able to track comets and asteroids or alien warships (if they are moving slowly).

The new mount firmware really improved the tracking and guiding in my CEM70!

I think I'll try upgrading mine today.  Have never upgraded the firmware in my CEM70.  This will be a new adventure smirk.gif ..

If it's anything like my CEM60.

Read the instructions all the way through first.  Turn off your creative brain and follow the iOptron instructions like a perfect robot.  <smile>

YAY!  Just finished my first upgrade of CEM 70 mount firmware and hand controller firmware (8407+).

No problems at all (other than it took me awhile to find the right connection cables).

I noticed that the mount firmware upgraded the main board, the RA board, and the DEC board.

Can't wait to try it out.  My CEM70 has been tracking / guiding pretty well before the upgrade.  Be interesting to see what it does now.

Thanks Bobzeq25 for the encouragement to give the upgrade a go...

Yes, the same updates are available for the GEM45.  Just did mine in addition to the CEM70.  All went well.

Hi

I’m neither an electrician nor a mechanic - plus I’m a bit impatient. Is this something I should attempt?

It's not overly challenging and the upgrade instructions are pretty clearly written. The only extra thing needed is the iOptron RS232 cable if you don't already have one along with a USB to RS232 adapter in order to update the hand controller. If you have the AZMP there should have been the RS232 cable included so then you'd just need the USB to RS232 adapter.

I just did my new CEM70G yesterday w/o any issues. The whole process only takes a few minutes once you have everything downloaded.

I update my CEM120EC2 firmware over the USB connection. Is there no way to do that with the CEM70s?

On the CEM70, the MOUNT firmware can be updated just using the USB connection as you have done with your CEM120.

If you want to also update the hand controller firmware on the CEM70's that have the 8407+ controller, you need the RS232 cable, etc.  I think some of the new mounts have the 8410 hand controller which can be updated at the same time as the mount firmware with just the USB cable.  I suspect you have the 8410 hand controller on your CEM120.

I have all the hardware I need to do the update, I’m just missing the patience to deal with 6-7 pages of update instructions. I took the mount over to iOptron for the last firmware update. I’ll review the 7 pages and decide whether to try it. Thank you.

Impatience is an excellent way to miss an instruction and mess things up.  It's unlikely (usually you can just go back to the start, and do things right), but you could conceivably brick the mount.

The process is not that hard, does not require any great expertise.  It does need to be done precisely according to the instructions.

I emailed Ioptron asking about the firmware update, I will let you all know if/when they answer.

I haven't had a chance to use the GEM45 yet.  I did use the CEM70 last night for the first time with the new firmware.  The guiding on my fairly new CEM70 has been pretty good.  Last night it was about the same as far as I could tell, in spite of seeing conditions not being very good.  Time will tell.

I suspect the upgrades were mostly about incorporating some bug fixes in the hand controller and also recognizing the new 8410 hand controller.  There have been reports from some CEM70 users on the iOptron forum that their guiding improved ?

If anyone knows more about what's changed, please share the details.

Too bad these updates will probably not be coming to the CEM60. Can someone post a pic of the new 8410HC? I’d like to see what it’s all about. Thanks.

My thoughts too.
And aren't the two (CEM60 and CEM70) so close related then why not?

There is no difference to the guiding performance with the new firmware that I can see - I suspect people are just getting excited lol.gif  Im sure if there was performance improvements iOptron would be crowing about it.

I'd be very surprised if the electronics on an iOptron mount that's several years old are the same as the ones on their most recent mounts.  This does not strike me as a company tied to the past.

iPolar and iGuider are new.  They needed to be linked to the electronics.  StarFi doesn't work on the 70, that's a clue.
