Here's a sketch from a couple weeks ago, in a wonderful dark sky site several hours away.   I really enjoyed pausing on this galaxy and taking it all in!  Definitely the best view of it that I've seen.

When I inverted this image in photoshop, I tried to keep the overall brightness consistent with how I remember it appearing in the eyepiece. It wasn't screaming bright, but the central dust lane was so pronounced and unmistakeable.  What a view!

Sketch details:

Graphite pencils on white paper, inverted in photoshop

Seeing: Good

Transparency: Good

Location: Grasslands National Park, SK

Scope: 17.5" f/5

This is a really fine representation of the eyepiece view Erick. Your description is so 'dead on' to the view on transparent evenings.Nicely drawn!                               Michael

Eric,

This is a fine sketch of NGC 891. An excellent edge on spiral galaxy with a remarkable dust lane.

Frank :)

Excellent sketch with a real "eye piece" feel!

Thank you for posting and yes this galaxy is not screaming bright but  a subtle beauty nonetheless.

Clear skies,

Randolph

Hi Eric,

That's a mighty fine sketch, and the view through your eyepiece must have been fantastic - very nice indeed!

Clear skies,

Darren.
