post-6788-0-93516500-1632266654.jpeg

This month, long-time member and active contributor Tim53 has offered this picture to start our thread. When I approached Tim about his favorite classic I was surprised by his response at first and then thought,' it is a restoration project of a unique scope'.Tim had this to say about it.

."This is my oddball C-14 on my bench, getting ready to be DPAC tested.  The OTA was part of one of my more interesting eBay auction wins from several years ago, when I purchased a pallet of several OTAs, including a couple of 6" and 8" Caves, an Optical Craftsmen 10", a Goto 4" refractor, and a complete Meade 856.  I've sold about half of that collection.  The C-14 was missing the corrector, so it took me some searching to find a replacement.  The OTA is about 2" longer than a stock C-14, and the primary baffle is 3 1/4" INSIDE diameter.  The secondary has a "C-14 prototype" in marker on the back, and a former Celestron employee seemed to recall it was a prototype from before the Edge HDs were made that was never finished.  The Intent must have been for full-frame or even medium format imaging, which is what I hope to use it for.  Because the Corrector didn't come with it, I plan to refigure the secondary to make the system perform as well as it can.  That can't be too hard, right?  grin.gif. All told, I might currently have about $300 invested in it."                         Thanks Tim!

The basic guideline for this thread is to list ads and auctions for classic/vintage scopes and associated accessories that others may be interested in. Do not post your own ads or the ads of your friends, this includes items you may be trying to sell for someone else. We request that you do not post photos from ads. If you must have some reference to a photo in the post, post a link to the photo, not the photo itself. Concentrate on the item for sale, and not the seller.

Please post a live link to the item. Do not post "PM me for the link".Short discussions can take place about the items listed. When quoting a post, edit the quoted post to include only the part you are replying to. Do not post the entire ad text, or large blocks of it, without permission from the author. Keep on topic, please!

Buyer Beware- CN is not responsible for any of the ads or auctions posted here or their content. There are some scams floating around, so do your homework before pursuing any ad.

and this note from the moderators
Let's remember everybody, there's no one place that has all the best-used scope finds just as there's no one place that never has anything. All have something. No need to beat subjective matter, whatever the topic, into the ground. For the sake of all of us who love the classic forum, please keep moving the threads forward. Remember that many of your fellow forum members are already vintage themselves. Instead of restating your opinions over and over, consider sharing something new, insightful, or otherwise constructive to the topic at hand.

barely classic?  2004 Meade 6" f/8 refractor in GA for $750.  A great price with the GoTo mount and JMI cases.

It gets better. It has the optional slo-mo DEC control.  This is a nice looking RV-6 deal.

I don't know of any RV-6 that had factory end rings. The posted one does, and the end rings look nicer than usual atm. This scope is likely to have had special respect and care.

The sellers may not know much so Caution. The photos are with the OTA precariously perched on the saddle and the clamping knobs on TOP.  The only thing holding the OTA assembly on the mount are the two ring studs going through the holes in the saddle.

A real Newtonian!

Seems like a bargin for a really neat collectable.

Fairly rare plus made by VIxen

Time for a new scope in my office :)

The buyer of the Vixen Newton is someone we all know and love and will do a great job of telling everyone the story and the quirks of this telescope.

Good price but the mount is really maxed out with that OTA.

I don’t think a 2004 scope is even barely a classic; it’s not even twenty years old.

I don't even count my GP C102 as classic yet.

And now for something different:

Dauer-Gelbon f=950mm.  It looks like it might be late 40s or early 50s. The mount is a tiny ball head with two solid pieces screwed together to clamp the tube and the ball. The objective appears uncoated and at most 50mm - the spacers look huge in comparison. There’s a bit of a Goto vibe going on with the focuser.

Classic Vixen "ICARUS DX" D=60mm F=910mm refractor on an alt-az yoke mount compete with tall wood tripod, eyepieces, and star diagonal, on Zen-Market:

https://zenmarket.jp...ode=m1023186574

Seller states that objective lens is clear, and the auction listing includes afocal images taken with a smartphone behind the included 20mm eyepiece (as well as through the 6x30mm finder).

Here's another classic Goto on Zen/Yahoo:

Science Education Promotion Law Standard Astronomical Telescope Astronomical Observation Telescope Current product

I let the translation stand as is because I think it's amusing, but you classic fans get the idea.  Looks like ~60cm very long f/l.  No tripod but otherwise looks like most of the pieces are there.  The lens cell is unmarked.

This is a model 105...60mm F/20.  The end of the OTA may be bent/damaged which could be why the objective cell is separated from the OTA.  Nice that it has the tripod tray unfortunately it has been orphaned from the mount.

I'd have left off the picture of Saturn, it really highlights the color present in the fast achromat.

Unitron 152 with drive, super focuser, Unihex, eyepieces, all boxes. Looks to be a later 60's model. Well cared for, though not pristine.  $3500 in Chicago area.

I'm the person referred to in the ad who has been providing some advice, as the seller reached out to me after I responded to a thread he started here. I have suggested adding an objective photo to the ad.

:)

I tried one of those out of curiosity. I had the 5" f/9.5 achromat and it was on the edge of usability, but i wanted to see. It was impossible to get uncolored stars. At best focus there was a rosy fringe on all the stars. The 5" was OK with a Baader semi-APO filter. I thought about using a really big Fraunhofer refractor and how I would handle the color problems. I guess if Saturn is the size of a dinner plate it doesn't matter :)

BTW the famous cross-reference for aperture vs. CA is very accurate. This.

He says he's now considering reasonable offers:  https://losangeles.c...7410670243.html

My reasonable offer would probably not appear so, as I only need the tripod and wedge.  I already have two of the OTAs (and we know how sought after those are!)

Here’s that listing on Zen Market. You have to use a proxy to buy something from yahoo.jp auctions and Zen is generally considered the best. You have to deposit enough to cover your bid, the fees, and domestic shipping before you bid.
