A 4' f15(16?) just to experience what was likely the best refractor most backyard stargazers of the 1950-1980 would have had.

Hmm, I'd say a vintage C11 or a bigger Cave, like a 12.5" f/6.  Both would be significant projects I'm sure, but I don't mind fixing/upgrading things and can still deal with heavy stuff.  But it will have to stay on hold for now because the garage doesn't need can't fit another behemoth, there's a whole herd of behemoth yaks already in there that need shaving, and I need to make room for a 14x40 or 16x40 lathe to make parts for large scopes.
