Terra, check this post by Scopejunkie. He bought it and returned it.

I think it's been ruined. IMO anything brass plated sucks. When it tarnishes you are out of luck.

If somebody really wants a brass Meade these have solid brass tubes

attachicon.gifMeade Brass telescopes copy.jpg

I'll bet some of the other hardware is plated, and since everything else is black it's not nearly as atractive as a antique brass scope.

Personally I still wouldn't bother.

Solid brass tubing is horribly expensive today.  $132/foot for 4 inch O.D. tubing for 1/8" wall.  Obviously too heavy for a telescope tube, but even if it were 1/16" it would still end up costing $300-ish for a 3ft tube.

The seller has it mounted backwards but yes, there was a 3” and a 4” and this one looks to me like the 3” as well.

Going to be very interesting to see where this goes since the seller started it off at a low price.

As you mentioned in another thread, look for a brass TV 102 wink.gif

BTW, I looked around the site and Barry had one of the Meade 314s (Towa) with a brass tube and said it was very good.

https://www.cloudyni...eade-model-314/

Yes   Kas         we liked it    got it for about 50 dollars  no finder  and no tripod    1/2 miles from my house   cleaned up  okay but there was just some      as Mike and Frank on Pickers would   say   "Patina"       I   found a meade  312 in blue on ebay   cheap   bought it    took the tripod off and gave the 312 to Zane for 20 dollars     he was able to make money on it to fund other projects      back to the 314   it was pretty good   thought it might be a Mizar     thought we would never get a finder in brass for it   but ran the want ad  and boom someone had three of them    presto  my buddy has it in North Berwick Maine    it is there whenever we need it

Back to Brass tacks     i like the TV Brass    the 102  the favorite

Looks like the same mount that marginally holds my Celestron C80, ouch. Reminds me of when in ignorance I mounted a 4 inch f/15 edmund on a decent vixen polaris mount.

4" OD x 0.065" Wall x 3.87" ID Brass Round Tube-H58 Seamless  36" ~$240.  Cu content bases the price, then brass demand for munitions, brass/bronze fixtures demand, processing and manufacturing costs yada yada.

Here's my BRASS Meade 314 that I purchased a bit over 4 years

ago from Maidhof Bros. Shipware Merchants in San Diego

It is a heavy thing and virtually all of  the metal on this, including the

mount, is brass. There are no problems with this optically but... the

weight of the OTA overpowers and compresses the adjustment mount

springs. thumbsdown3.gif This causes the OTA to rock up and down gve.gif

while attempting to view sky thingies The springs are one of the few

parts on this heavy beast that are not brass. These springs are rather

heavy duty so replacing them, if even available with stronger ones,

"might" solve the problem but eh...maybe later?.shrug.gif

I also have the much lighter and beautiful dark blue no brass model

which does not have these problems and is far more suitable to view

the mysteries above us.

On a "lighter" note there was a very large anvil about three plus feet long

sitting on the floor in this shop.I inquired about it, as I had always wanted

one, although not necessarily one that large. The owner (really good fella)

told me to try and lift it. Not a chance for ol' badback here. ohmy.gif  No, No, No!

Figured i give her a tilt though and WOW!!! This incredible anvil was in reality

an amazing, totally realistic looking uh...prop. Weighed about 5 pounds.

Laughs were heard in this brass kingdom, including my own.lol.giflol.gif

This telescope was being sold because the owner decided that this

particular one wasn't really a maritime thingie. Lucky me.

He paid $100 for it but only charged me $75. waytogo.gif Too much fun

Have to wonder why simple electronic camera trackers today cost $300-$500?  Even a mechanical one today would work ok for lenses 100mm or shorter.
