FYI it seems many telescopes and mounts are up 25-30% in the new year.   So much for procrastination.  Dangit

There are a couple of ongoing, recent threads on the same issue going around presently.  Have a look.

I was shocked when I today saw that both High Point Scientific and B&H Photo were offering Sky-Watcher Evostar Pro 100mm F/9 and 120mm F/7.5 EDs for $1,255.00 and $2,490.00, respectively!

I noticed two of the scopes I bought in the last two years are up significantly in price. I don’t think the Losmandy mount I bought a year and a half ago has gone up. Demand and supply is kicking in. I am a little bit surprised that prices hadn’t gone up sooner.

Its supply and demand like you said, but more significant is the devalued dollar....

I think the funniest thing I've come across is buying the 8" Edge I got it for the price stated on a site that had to order it in with a 1-3 month wait time.

After the order was placed the next day the price increased.....so they probably had to absorb the increase on my order.

I still waiting to see what the next 'jump' will be, the next time one is ordered. lol

But CloudyNight's sponsor, astronomics.com, has extended their sale past the New Year.

Picked up a great deal on a used AT130EDT F7.  New ones still on sale.

Amazon & Walmart prices are quite ridiculous. Walmart has my Orion ST80 on a equatorial mount for over $900. Mine cost $300 in late October. I have a Celestron AZ-3 mount which is about $20 cheaper than the EQ1 mount as with.the $900 scope package. Check out Amazon for their prices on Skywatcher scopes. Can't keep up with the prices seems to rise each week.

I strongly suspect that these prices are set by a pricing algorithm that does not reflect reality.  I'm not sure what the inputs are, but Amazon definitely seems to price certain items extremely high if they are out of stock at a number of other vendors on site.  This was most obvious right after Willmann Bell closed and some of their popular books had become very hard to find.  It was not uncommon to see the price of some of their titles increase to the high hundreds of dollars from a sticker price of $50 or less.  That said, it isn't clear that any sold at that price.

Some of the increase is undoubtedly real and driven by supply and demand, inflation, supply chain and a number of other factors.  However, a 3x or 4x increase is just as likely to be the result of an automated pricing system gone amuck.

If the Willmann Bell items, for example, are no longer sold new and are available from Amazon through third party sellers, why would you think Amazon is involved in pricing them? Those price escalations seem to me to be more associated with third party sellers realizing they had harder to get inventory.

For Takahashi US Customers, these new prices of other brands not so shocking. After all, we (as Takahashi US customers) are used to absurd prices of accessories.

example 1:

You want use 2" diagonal and eyepiece with 60mm or 76mm refractors, pay this.

2" adapter

example 2:

You want to have a camera angle adjuster (for visual use), pay this

caa

One good news is there is no price increase on these adapters.  lol.gif

If you don't care for Tak optics, you can get this for less than the price of the above two adapters.

I am happy that i bought what i can buy the last 2 years as i know that something like that can happen, so i care to buy more and very soon rather than waiting like 2-5 years testing one thing or two before i decide on something else but it is too late and i can't afford.

Now i have to modify my plan according to this new pricing or policies with manufacturers and whatever, the remaining items i want to buy now is more expensive than the ones i ordered last years, so now it will more complicated and difficult to get things on time with reasonable prices.

It’s generally not Amazon nor Walmart that is responsible for those ridiculous prices, it’s third party vendors looking to make a killing when supplies run low.

For prices on Amazon I check CamelCamelCamel.com to see what past prices have been.

Edit: Checked the receipt, dated 11/11/2013. Sale price 649usd....

My 180mm Mak cost me about $1000 including shipping back in 2018, those prices your mentioned are insane, good that none of those scopes are at my radar anyway.

Yeah, I remember something like that, as well.  The shocking thing for me about the SW 100 ED's price is that I thought I saw it going for around $990.00 only a few days ago.  Now, $1,255.00.  A similar type of increase also occurred with the SW 120 ED.  If memory serves me well, its price jumped from about $2,050.00, days ago, to $2,490.00, yesterday!  Though not mentioned by me, yesterday, the Sky-Watcher Evostar Pro 80mm F/7.5 ED now goes for $1,080.00 at High Point and for $1,077.95 at B&H.

Like you, and sunrag and TareqPhoto, above, I am also very happy to have purchased what I have been able to afford in gear over the last few years.

Clear skies!

There are real supply chain problems and labor shortages, granted.

However, on top of this underlying reality, it’s quite evident there is a HUGE amount of opportunistic pricing going on by manufacturers and larger vendors.

Its the consumers and smaller vendors taking the primary financial hit —as always.
