Back in 1971 I brought my first 35mm camera, a Leica M4 body for approx $400 at a well known NYC camera store.

 

Goolly, I was sweating bullets then, wow that's a lot of moola..had to call and ask the significant other if its was OK..she said: "Do it..you always wanted a Leica"

 

Holy Flying Batman (but I think I said something else..)

 

Side note:  so I married her and we are still together after 50 years..

 

So here today we now see the newest Leica M11 with a 60 MP sensor..and its only $8,995 

USD!

Ahhh  dunno but me thinks Leica has lost their minds....

 

PS: however, the M11 still looks Grand...

 

PPS: wonder if my M4 lens fit the M11...hmmmm

Do the math on what $400 1971 dollars is worth these days. You've be surprised. That was the year Nixon closed the gold window.

Well you got me thinking so I did what most baby boomers would do today: I Google it!

 

"Value of $400 from 1971 to 2022

 

$400 in 1971 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $2,753.60 today, an increase of $2,353.60 over 51 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.86% per year between 1971 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 588.40%.

This means that today's prices are 6.88 times higher than average prices since 1971, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index. A dollar today only buys 14.53% of what it could buy back then.

Bottom line:

Leica has lost their mind

Do you want to use this camera for astrophotography?

 

If so the alternative is a common camera, a star tracker, some fine lenses and still money left.

 

Want a Leica and not willing to pay? If the price is too high then this product was not meant for you.

Wow! That is a wild price - but a gorgeous camera!

 

As for your old lens fitting - I am not sure. I have an old Canon T70 from 1985 and I bought an adapter to fit it's 50mm f/1.8 lens onto my Canon M50 and it works wonderfully. So maybe there's a chance?

LOL at the CPI. Seems about time they redefined it to keep inflation down again. ;O)

Nah, I want to get it and put into a climate controlled glass case...then every any day that I wake up, I can just LOOK UP AT IT.

 

Do you want to use this camera for astrophotography?
