Here are a couple more attempts.  M77 and M1 are from a few months ago, and M13 is more recent [revisiting an older image].  However, just having viewed the video on the Mellish technique, I'm really getting drawn to the white charcoal on black paper.  It's just stunning.  Lots of practice ahead!

A good question.  I'm thinking that the pencil sketches will be the standard entries for the journal, but the white charcoal for objects that I want to give special treatment.  So not all will get rendered in that medium.  I'm just starting out, so exploration is a big part of that decision.  I doubt it will be a clearly conscious one.

Thanks!!  Okay, then.  Here are a couple more.  Observing conditions look pretty good tonight, so I'm hoping to bag a few more.   For these, the skies were pretty transparent and the seeing was around 3/5.  Bortle 4.5 to 5.  For M57, it seemed to float in a somewhat sparse star field, and the central star was visible but more with averted vision.  It seemed somewhat obscured.  This image is a white on black revision of my black on white original sketch, since M57 won't be back for a while.   For M42 the whole thing leaped out, but the more gossamer elements came into view with time and averted vision.  All four of the Trapezium stars were clear even at medium magnification.

These are excellent sketches showing a lot of detail and control of the media. Keep enjoying the process, being happy with what you create follows (and you should be very happy here!) I think we all start to gravitate toward what works best in our hands. I am on the black paper side and sometimes struggle now with white paper. So I would say keep trying new things!

So after a bit of time, I'm thinking definitely a thoroughfare!  Didn't take long.  But as Warmvet advised, I'll try not to get tunnel visioned.

Fantastic sketches. I have just started trying white on black myself and find your efforts very inspirational. Now if the weather would just cooperate.
