Hi all,

Normally when I image M42 I do so from dark skies with a UV/IR cut filter using an OSC camer. However, what OSC filter would you all recommend for M42 when shooting during a full moon in Urban Bortle 8 skies?

Is it correct that M42 is both emission and reflection nebula? What is a city boy to do?

My available filters are . . .

- L-Extreme Dual Band
- IDAS D1
- Balder Moon and Skyglow
- optolong Uv/IR cut

Hutech NBZ filter is the one that I would highly recommend.

 

10nm transmission bandpass for both  Ha & OIII

I shoot in Bortle 8/9 with an unmodded DSLR and don't use any filter for M42.

Hutech NBZ filter is the one that I would highly recommend.

Yeah, I was thinking either that or the Baader M&S. Both are relatively broadband. I guess it shouldn’t block out too much of the desirable photons.

Yeah? Even in a Bortle 8 - almost 9-is - plus a full moon?

Integrate a lot (A LOT!) and do background extraction in post processing. You can use Ha filter for the emission part to boost contrast.

I just tried the IDAS LPS-D3 for the first time last night. The Moon was not yet up when I was doing the EAA thing. I was pleased with how the filter performed. SQM-L was 18.07. This is about 12 minutes of 15 second subs.

 

M42 and Running Man, C11 with Hyperstar v3 and QHY183C

 

 

EDITED to suggest you search up the Jim Thompson reports on filters. Lots of good test info is available. And to say that the above image is two panels that matched up nicely. In case someone was wondering about the FOV of a v3 Hyperstar with a 183

I'm going to give it a shot with just the UV/IR cut filter.  Partially because my other filters need to be cleaned and I'm afraid to clean them until I watch a dozen YouTube videos - hahaha.
