Hi All,

 

Last night I got the attached photo of Orion (Canon T3i, 50 mm f/1.8 lens @ f/2.8 596 exposures @ 2 sec each ISO 1600 on a fixed tripod, processed in DSS & Photoshop).  This from a Bortle 2 spot.

 

I've labeled some objects of interest.  Did I get the Running Man & M43 labeled correctly?

No, your label of running man is really the Flame nebula. I believe your label of m43 is really the running man.

Both Running Man and M43 are wrong. What you have labeled as the Running Man is the Flame Nebula. What you labeled as M43 is the Running Man, but the Running Man is not M43. M43 is the small comma shaped appendage attached to the top of M42 in your image.The Running Man is the separate nebula, SH2-279 that you have labeled M43..

If you use Siril, you can use the "Show Object Names" function and then take a snapshot of the displayed image. I would imagine that other programs have a similar function. Here's an image of mine (Also using a Canon T3i, but with a 200mm SMC Takumar lens) from the other night just to give you an example, but as you can see, there's a lot more going on in that area than just the famous targets, so it can get a little cluttered. However, using a program like Stellarium will let you easily identify objects if you wish to label them yourself.

You could also try uploading your image to http://nova.astrometry.net/upload , which will attempt to automatically platesolve and label your image.

Thanks for the corrections on my labeling and the tip about Stellarium, which I use a lot.  I didn't realize it would identify so many deep sky objects.

 

And yes, I feel fortunate to have reasonably dark skies around Prescott.  FYI, I was at Tonto Rd., just off Iron Springs Rd. about 15 mi WNW of downtown Prescott.
