I managed to score both volumes a week or so ago :)

These are unavailable in print, but for anyone interested in the atlas, Volume I and Volume II are available electronically.

Unfortunately not as part of a single document to easily download, but still there to see for anybody interested.

A was sitting on the fence for long time, thinking of buying this set. Just ordered Volume 1. Not cheap, $113 US, incl. shipping. Next copies of two volumes, in as new condition, start from $500 US. Now will hunt for Vol.2. Will be a nice addition to my Hubble Atlas of Galaxies

It's a beautiful set, and a nice continuation of the Hubble Atlas of Galaxies.  Just be forewarned that each volume is large and hefty.

Large and hefty sounds just fine!

At some point, getting one of these (or something similar) to put on my desk, so that I can read large books and not worry about any damage to them.

They are cloth bound and almost indestructible!  smile.gif

Unfortunately, seller asked unreasonable price for shipping (book is heavy), and I've cancelled. frown.gif

Hunt is continuing.

When this publication came out in the early 1990s, each volume was sold for (I believe) $92, which was below production. As mentioned above, these books are massive. In another tread, the heft of the new book “William Herschel: Discoverer of the Deep Sky” is discussed (in size, about the same size as Uranometria: All Sky Edition, and a little over eight pounds). See photos below... each Carnegie Atlas volume weighs eleven pounds. I got my set about a decade ago and paid $250... I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. If a set EVER comes up, snap it up, no questions asked...

Even though the set is quite heavy, they could still be shipped at the media mail rate, which shouldn't be all that bad.

They want more than $50 US shipping for one volume.

I believe the item was being shipped to Canada, so, expensive at the best of times...

Below, interior spreads... When opened, the book is 36 inches wide, 14 inches deep.

That's more than I would've wanted to pay.

I usually look at mine at the dining room table.  Definitely can't peruse it in a hammock!

The notice of availability for the Carnegie Atlas of Galaxies appeared in the May 1995 issue of S&T on page 55. The price for the set of two volumes was $96 postpaid.

Alex,

Both of mine shipped for $4.99 within CONUS. Of course, the real cost will be when I have these (and another 5-6 books) shipped half way across the world from my drop-ship address!

If anyone is interested, these can be downloaded as JPG's.  If you number them in order, and then convert the whole stack to a ZIP (uncompressed - just archive), then you can change the ZIP extension to CBR (the format that electronic comic books use).  You can open that CBR file in any comic book reader (the Comics++ app is free on the Windows store and works just fine).  If you make Comics++ your default comic reader, then if you save the "book" in calibre, it will automatically open, just like a PDF or an EPUB.

EDIT: I just did this for Volume 1 and it was about 350 pages and 98mb.  Took maybe an hour.  Keep a strong cup of coffee nearby...

I couldn't quite spring for the $300 I saw the pair offered for, but I did find a nice paperback copy of the Hubble Atlas for $20 - so I grabbed it.

...which would mean that originally, the Atlas was sold for waaayyyyyy below production costs...

I bought my set new in 2007 in the original Carnegie packaging from Amazon for just under $200.  Not sure if it was actually still in print at that point.  My understanding is that not many of them were printed.

It's been so many years since I last perused this book at a local university library that I can't recall whether the object with catalog number IRAS 18059-3211 -- more popularly known as Gomez's Hamburger -- is shown therein.  Or am I instead thinking of The Carnegie Deli Atlas of Galaxiessmile.gif

I also got my Hubble Atlas for something around $40 CAD incl. shipping, paperback.

Willing to part at measly $20,000, incl shipping wink.giflol.gif

Did that include insurance?
