If you did...
What EP's would you buy (a complete set)?
What Barlow?

And for us plebs with limited resources, just what is that elusive perfect combination???

That's depending on how much lottery you have won ;)

What's the f-ratio of the scope?

For a fast scope (F5 or less) with a 2" focuser:
31 nagler T5
22 nagler T4
16 nagler T5 (or 17 T4, depending on taste)
11 nagler T6 (or 13 T6 if you got the 17)
7 nagler T6 (add 9 if you got the 17-13 combo)
5 nagler T6
3.5 nagler T6

For a fast scope with only a 1.25" focuser, start with a 24 panoptic, then 16 nagler T5 on down. You could also sub the Pentax XW's for any of the naglers if you prefer the long eye relief.

For a slower scope (>f6) with a 2" focuser:

41 Pan or 40 Pentax XL
26 nagler T6
17 nagler T4
12 nagler T4
9 nagler T6
7 nagler T6
5 nagler T6

With a 1.25" focuser, same as for a fast scope.
Again, sub Pentax XW's if you prefer long eye relief.

You could also sub a 35 pan in for the 31 nagler or 41 pan if their weight would cause balance problems.

Planetary nuts may want to throw in some orthos, but you don't need to win the lottery for those....

And of course, you will need to buy 2 sets (one for you, and one for me for telling you which ones to buy.....)

How about a Denk binoviewer Premium SCT package with dual 9mm, 11mm, 13mm and 16mm Naglers and a pair each of 19 and 24mm Panoptics. Then throw in one each of the 17mm, 20mm, 22mm, 26mm and 31mm 2" Naglers. Add 3.5mm, 5mm and 7mm Nagler T6's for high power. Throw in a 2" 2X Big Barlow, 2x and 4x (2") PowerMates and 2.5x and 5x PowerMates.

Even with that it only comes to about $8,967 plus shipping. Better add 41mm and 35mm Panoptics, and a 55mm TV Plossl. $10,055.00 Get it all at Digitec and save shipping charges!

This should be a good assortment for fast newts and slow SCT’s?

Regards,
Stacy

Unlimited expense? Heck, I'd buy one of every TeleVue available along with the zooms and Powermates and then donate the ones that don't work well with my scope to some lucky newbie!! That probably wasn't very helpful but that's what I'd personally do!

I guess it would depend on how much you win! Even if it was $10 Million I wouldn't be throwing money away. :shameonyou: My selection is what I am working on right now. So far I have one 19mm Panoptic. Wow! Only $9,815 more to go! See it’s already below $10,000 … This will go quick!

I would never win the lottery as I never play. I take my money and invest in stocks, bonds, cd's, etc....

It may not be as cool as the thought of winning the lottery. But I have much more than most lottery players do.

And my current eye pieces are:
Tele Vue Panoptic 35mm
Tele Vue Nagler Type 4 22mm
Tele Vue Plossl 20mm
Tele Vue Radian 14mm
Tele Vue Radian 8mm
Pentax XW 5mm
Tele Vue Nagler T6 3.5mm
Tele Vue Nagler T6 2.5mm

I would also consider the Pentax XW line of eyepieces.

I would look for a low power 40mm EP. That will give you your widest field of view and your largest exit pupil. Since you are using these with an SCT, I would favor the 40mm over a 30mm for the extra light - your 12" scope will have enough magnification. I would get an EP in the 20mm to 15mm range for medium power. And then around a 9mm EP for high power.

I would also add a high-quality 2" diagonal and a 2" PowerMate. Use an a 2" to 1.25" adapter for the 1.25" EPs.

I would start with three EPs and see what my local sky conditions were like before becoming a collector. EPs can be very personal. What your highest mag. limit would be is more to do with the seeing than the size of your scope.

u20pnm, you may want to tell the others what scope you are going to use this in. It will influence the answers.

Focal length? Having won the lottery, I have 23 scopes, f/ ratio ranges from f/3.5 to f/20. APOs, SCTs, Maks, R-Cs, D-Ks...

Barlow? Who needs Barlows - I just buy two of everything in every focal length (got several binos, ya' know...). :money:

First I would buy a 16" or larger SCT scope
Second I would buy all the panoptic EP's
Third for high power radians or orthos

Last(you will think i am drunk) but I would get the speers-walers over the naglers, they are actually better contrast wise.

Very last................. the best EP's on the market bar none are the meade super plossls (yes now I am drunk) Ha ! Ha ! too much BEEEEEEER ! :jump:

Well ideally for me it would be to go with a 12" SCT but i'm interested in all your opinions reguardless of scopes.

I like the idea of >$10000 of EP's but I think if i was spending that amount i might be upgrading my scope also, then again we have just won the lottery, why dont we buy an observatory and a planetarium!!!!

PaulJuno, I also never play but i am relying on the probability of finding a winning ticket being only marginaly less likely than buying one!

Erik, why dont you just get someone to burn down walmart (I didn't encourage you if anyone asks)

A new megascope with your lottery money and a carefully focussed beam of sunlight! With GPS and a tall building you should be able to burn down all the walmarts in your state :p ;)

I would buy a 15 or 18inch truss Obsession dob, with the Argus system installed. For eyepieces I would get a complete set of the Pentax XW line. And with lastly I would get a Subaru OUtback AWD wagon to haul it in :)

I have one - it is a good car, and quite nice for hauling scopes. They just came out with the 2005 models, too - 250hp engine with the same gas mileage as the old engine.

My Ma has one, probably not as big as your american models but they are nice, and enough room for that extra large scope!

yeah, i also saw that eyepiece on ed ting's site. it's worthy of putting on the mantel! i think i'd be afraid to actually use it though. all this talk about what we'd buy if we won the lottery...no wonder so many people that win the lottery end up filing bankruptcy a couple of years later, $1700 ep's will do that quickly!
