If you need the eye relief.

If you don't, the 7mm APM XWA is excellent as well.

I don't need the eye relief, though I can appreciate the extra comfort.  But I've never tried a 7mm APM XWA.  A 6 or 8mm Ethos would be a good choice for a 100 degree eyepiece - I have them - but neither is 7mm.

My comment was in reference to 7mm. A 6mm Ethos is a simply superb eyepiece in every way.

I thought so when I owned all the Ethos, and I was pleased to see Ernest's test indicated the same.

Seriously, thought, the 7mm and 9mm XWAs are excellent eyepieces.

If you like higher powers, I could see alternating Ethos and XWAs for 9mm, 8mm, 7mm, and 6mm

Would an ethos even make sense for bortle 8 skies? I'm guessing with an f/4.7 dob I'd likely need to spring for the paracorr also.

In terms of eye relief I have the eyecup extended all the way out on the Pentax 7 xw and it seems pretty comfortable. I think the eye relief is listed at 20mm and I do tend to put my eye on the eyepiece.

Wish the skies would clear so I can get more testing in with the Penny. So far however, it seems good.

An Ethos - especially a 6 or 8mm Ethos - with an f/4.7 Dob makes good sense.  The light pollution doesn't matter.  Dobs usually don't track.  Actually, the 3.7 and 4.7 Ethos-SX are two of my favorite eyepieces in my 10" f/4.8 Dob.

IMO, it matters as much if not more for urban observing. You want as much as magnification as possible with enough framing to stand a chance of seeing a DSO. In other words, you want the majesty factor to be very high. An exit pupil around 1.5mm will be great for urban observing. So I agree, something along the lines of 8mm Ethos will be dang nice.

Well, gotten a little bit more use from the eyepiece, solar and deep sky (from what I can see that is) still need to give the refractors a go with it. I don't think I regret the purchase but I'm also not sure I'm going to try another from this lineup, at least yet.

Eye relief seems good as do the views so far but also noted it's really easy to blackout the view and I think that's because the eyepiece does run smack into my nose and thus I need to turn my head. Probably not a huge problem, just a learned behavior.

There are 2 possible additions in the line however if I do grab another one, the 14mm and 20mm (which might be subject to field curvature in my shower focal ratio telescopes).

As I mentioned I do not think I regret the purchase of the 7mm I might try a delos. My 3mm delite and 13mm nagler are something I'm not sure on. The 13mm is just a little short on eye relief I think, the view seems not sure how to explain it, hard?
