Does anyone have a fairly clear minimum specifications for each category for a decent astronomy NV tube? We have these conversations come up quite a bit.

Historically all I could find was something like the below:

Gain>=60000
Resolution >= 64
EBI <= 1
PC Sensitivity >= 2200
SNR >= 30
Halo <= 1
Blem = 0

It'd be nice if we had a minimum, medium, high.

I've always got the feeling the differences between all these is somewhat hard to describe. As some tubes will be good in one category and others in another.

I myself have only looked through one tube (my own). So I don't really have much of a feel for potential differences.

Assuming you're talking about generally available PVS-14's and not the outlying unicorn tube, I think some can be separated into minimum, mid, and high spec. But like you mentioned, the difference between certain areas of specs might not even be noticeable, like resolution going from 64 to 72.

My thoughts based on what I've read, and when I spoke to reps.

Minimum/mid/high

Gain 60-64k/64-68k/68k+

Resolution 64/72/81+

EBI 0.8-1.0/0.5-0.7/<0.5

PCR 2000-2200/2200-2500/2500+

SNR 29-32/32-36/36+

Halo 1.0/0.7-0.9/<0.7

Blems/spots None in zone 1 and 1-2 total at outer edge in zone 2 and zone 3/ None in zones 1 & 2, 1 in outer edge of zone 3/No spots visible at all in tube image, no FPN or chicken wire.

I'm curious to see what other more experienced users think.

It’s  all the other items, filters, TV 55 mm EP, etc.

Here is a thought, would the trybe adapter make a PVS into a prime mode NVD that would work with a 8” F4 powernewt, which can be pirchased for 500 pounds/dollars.

With that in mind, you would just need to add a filter, no need for a TV EP and you would be good to go.

Anyone used a PVS14 and trybe adapter with a powernewt?
