I'm in the process of qualifying gene editing on bone marrow-derived hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in order to recapitulate the lineage biasing seen in AML. Here, HSCs were obtained from healthy donor and treated with various cytokines that induced differentiation of the HSCs into the final blood cell lineages, such as platelets, erythrocytes and various white blood cells. I took this image through the camera port of a low-power microscope of the colonies that arose with a T6i. Not a fancy image, but still pretty cool!

HEMA is blood, like hemophilia and hematoma and the high school science movie, Hemo the Magnificent "(sea water" is the last line spoken on the first reel). 

POIEA is making like poetry and onomatopoeia (making word-names from sounds).

 

That was the easy part. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) Don't you just hate it when people toss out initializations and acronyms? (I am into AP with my C6 and the ZWO did not capture M13 well.)

Anyway... I have four microscopes here and I stay on the mailing list at AmScope because eventually, I will have a birthday and then Christmas and then a wedding anniversary.

Perhaps deeper and more complex than the macro-universe. Perhaps they are the same thing.

You know, Neil DeGrasse Tyson says that every home needs a telescope and a microscope. (Allow me to add: a musical instrument and a library card.)

Looks like dying cells. what does the control dish look like?

Apologies for the acronyms! Please don't get too annoyed about it. 

This is a control dish, and they are alive. 

The cells are cultured in a semisolid media so they form identifiable colonies as the single cells expand and differentiate. The big dark colonies (about 0.5 to 1mm in diameter) are immature red blood cells originating from a single precursor. The clear cells are colonies formed from monocyte and granulocyte (aka pus cells) precursors. They often like to creep around on the dish after several days.

 

Think of this as what goes on in the bone marrow.

Hi Frank

AML is one of the many tracks. This includes prostate and lung cancer, developing and applying overlapping technologies for earlier detection.
