Can we add a CN Classic Classifieds pact that people shouldn't contact sellers unless they're just asking questions about condition they can come back and share with us? lol.gif

I vote yeah.

Asahi Pentax 85/1000 (OTA and box only) - $200 in Cedar Park, TX

https://www.facebook...547414606778045

This listing posted by jragsdale in the locked thread is a superb buy. The telescope is rare and offers nearly APO performance in a perfectly sweet sized aperture and focal ratio. Too bad it does not have the mount but the scope by itself is still very special. Here is my video about one quite memorable telescope!

I agree - I love mine (which was formerly yours). Although there is a little color, I've had it up to 100X per inch on Venus, without it being objectionable, and gotten some wonderful views of thin-crescent Venus where it appears that the back-illuminated limb arcs past the poles. $200 is a steal.

Soooooo, the original paint on the early tri colors melts with exposure?  The paint on Serial Number One was well worn but still solid compared to decomposed.

No it wasn't.  I saw it at one of the PATS conventions.  It looked pretty bad in person.  It was also only the OTA serial No 1, not the whole scope.  The rest of it consisted of a hodgepodge of mount parts from the mid to late 70s.

I saw C-8 S/N 1 when Neil had it. It was a complete unit with the very early focuser on the rear port, and the old power connector on the drive. It was actually in pretty decent shape. I think Celestron had separate numbering sequences for the fork mounted units and OTAs that were sold separately. So these may be different S/N 1 scopes.

Yes, two different C8s. The one Celestron has is the one Tim mentioned.

Neil's was the real deal:

Brandon Vernon scope 94mm - $3,000 in Wayne, PA

https://philadelphia...7491002459.html

I love that baby blue Brandon (AP) Vernonscope. Not bad price for whole kit including the big Unitron mount and big 48mm eyepiece. I wanted one for a long time, but it’s not part of my current plan. I’ll stick with my wonderful TV Genesis SDF on the Gibralter mount and the 2” 38mm Erfle for that experience.

Here’s something else I wanted for a long time:

https://www.cloudyni...s-5in-f5-brass/

It’s not gonna happen so hopefully someone will snatch it up. My 120mm F6.67 Vixen and 6” F4.5 Newt RFT fill the bill of that, so it would be duplicating purposes. Deciding against collecting and thinning the herd to specific niches has made my life easier (and less expensive)!

The Vixen C102 is beyond insane sharp, so is the Meade 826. So they stay till death as well as a ST80. Just not worth shipping a ST80 so it will be used on clear fall nites with a 16mm Nagler. I don't plan to buy anything unless local and has to be something that is crazy priced or something rare i have not owned.

Everybody should have an ST80 or some similar variant. They are cheap fun and so easy to use.

I have no idea what a PATS convention is.  I don't know of any other references ever made about the true orange C8 tricolor serial number 1 until the family that got it from Tom J. sold it to me.  I'd like to know more. Here is a link to the scope, now sold by me to another respectable CN member. The second page shows mug shots (better than the first picture on page one). Sure the paint is worn but it was still solid with no degredation. It could have been cleaned up well enough to be kept original from the factory.

Tricolor 1

The scope came to me complete with mount and trunk. It didn't look like it was ever deforked. It was far from my first time through with O.T C8, here is another link to previous ones, and there were others as well, all sold now. I think something has crossed up in references here.  The link in this paragraph has a lot of info comparing the sand cast to the die cast.

The 94mm units (as opposed to the 92mm) were lighter.  The mount is undergunned for it though.

The legs look thinner than the one that came with my mount.

The counterweighted mount is noticeably heavier and easily handles my 94mm, and heavier scopes.  Easier to balance with the counterweight.

This mount is a good jump up than the mount that came with my 3 inch unitron with the long tube.

That mount was designed to replace the big fork mount on the 4” F15 Unitron model 150.

Pix would be nice...  Cheshire??

My "new" Jaegers 6" F5 is due today... I've wanted one since seeing an owner's pix in S&T -- way back in the mid-1970s.  Couldn't afford it as a teen, so I made my own 8" F5 Newt for a whole lot less (and $$ spread out over many months).  GoldSlinger (aka, Stubby) takes me back 45 years, and I can't imagine not having a Big RFT, even in The City.  Every dollar invested in this (primarily) Edmund 6" F4 Newt has been returned 10-fold.

He states it doesn't work and the front lens is cracked. He's probably gotten conflicting information from the busybody squad and now regrets even posting it.

I hate selling Unitron equipment...  fingertap.gif

It's been tried. Or more accurately, it's been suggested. It's like herding pollywogs.

Does it look like almost solid fungus on the objective?  May just be dirty, but I would be concerned about permanent etching of the glass....

Scope looks very nice other than that.

It's an uncommon Model 6335 -- only 4 in The Registry (vs. 42 Model 6339s).

Lens is dirty & dusty, but looks 100% restorable.  If I lived in the area, I'd buy it, restore it, and flip it.

That mount was designed to replace the big fork mount on the 4” F15 Unitron model 150.

It is very easy to be confused by pictures of these mounts because they are so similar. The mount for the Brandon is actually an "in-between" mount and not as big as the 150 mount.

You can see the difference in my video here: https://youtu.be/ETlMv-KLEVM

Here are a couple of screenshots to illustrate the illusion:

Yes, it’s definitely smaller than a 150.   However unlike another thread that suggested a 140 was converted with a counterweight, it seems like an In-between as shown here:  beefier than a 140.

Mayflower 80/1200 EQ (Towa) - $300 in Grand Junction, CO

https://westslope.cr...7491135357.html

Very nice Meade RG 6" EQ - $700 in Madison, AL

https://www.facebook...179555198877715

Both ads are kind of bogus.

The Mayflower was up for sale for about $50 close to Grand Junction. Either someone is flipping it or the seller raised their price from bad input. This is not the classic Mayflower on a smooth black finished mount, with an SPI or HOC symbol. It is on the more modern wrinkle finish mount and is labeled Circle T by Towa Corp.  The seller did OK by stating "good condition", it certainly isn't great, missing parts, needs work, broken accessories. Maybe 100 to 200. Maybe hit $200 for a motivated buyer. I exchanged a few email with the original seller for $50, but the distance wasn't practical to get it and shipping wasn't happening. That scope should be under 300 shipped anywhere lower 48.

The Meade is a regular model 628, NOT even REMOTELY a Meade Research Grade.  The price is ridiculous for a Meade 628. It does look excellent but very little for accessories, not even the DEC slo-mo, and they just don't get close to that asking price. That 6" OTA  would never balance on a stock Meade RG mount. You would have to customize a smaller counterweight system or possibly none at all. A Mead RG with NO weights might balance that OTA.

There was never a 6" RG.  Only 8" thru 12.5" on a 1.5" shaft mount.

I agree with your assessment, Jae. There was a bewildering variety of Unitron altaz mounts and it's very easy to get them confused with each other. I have even seen variation in the three inch altaz mounts; taller necks like yours and shorter ones. Keeps you guessing! I am not sure if the smaller counterweighted mount was originally intended for a three inch refractor or if it was dedicated to this particular 94mm Brandon.

Like your Brandon outfit, too!! Very nice and appears to be all original.

If you want a Unitron 3 inch equatorial telescope and you can get to Arizona here is a very fine example of an early vintage scope from a trusted CN member. Only $800? I cannot believe Brian is letting it go for that price. What a deal!

I have a video about a similar three inch with a few more bells and whistles:
