Thanks so much for providing those detailed measurements. I really wish my former AT80ED had had those rings. In that case the tube would have remained completely unblemished, without screw damage. As it is, those tiny screw marks are completely covered by the rings, but still…

Astro Tech 80EDL or 80EDT?

Warren,
I just started a thread dedicated to this scope and perhaps you would repost some of this there? My idea is to have a central thread for the 80 EDL scope (like we have for others). Your info is quite useful and I think may be more easily seen by an interested audience than those reading a thread comparing 2 scopes.
Anyway, cheers and happy new year!

Thanks, Alan! I think that’s a great idea, and to save Warren the trouble of reposting all of his information, I’ve moved his posts to the new thread here: https://www.cloudyni.../#entry12390012
Edit: Ugh. That move didn’t work, as it placed all of Warren’s posts before Alan’s introductory post, since moving the posts still keeps them in the correct chronological order. I placed Warren’s posts back in this thread, and I think the best thing to do will be for Warren to place a link in the new thread pointing back to these individual posts.
Warren, if you don’t know how to do that, let me know, and I can help.

Each screw weighs 0.1 ounces X 3 screws:

Thank you so much for taking the time to weigh everything. It looks like what I have is actually lighter... I am trying to make a clamshell fit the scope but it's a about 4mm too large.

Jon,
I had a similar problem moving a Towa 339 from a clamshell to rings. My solution was to go to a craft store and purchase a sheet of cork. I removed the felt from the rings and glued cork strips in place. Worked perfectly without marring the OTA finish in the least.

Hi Scott,
Never been there nor done that ! When it comes to dovetail and ring mounting bolts, I usually measure three times, buy several different lengths and then still test to see if I can feel the bolt tips through the felt before I actually install the main tube in the rings. Going in blind after installing the main tube in the rings, it is really difficult to determine exactly how far the screws will go in/through.

Yes…I of all people should know this after all these years, but some things take forever to learn.

I use this Harbor Freight Caliper to check hole depth on tube rings to avoid potential bottom out problems. The rod part on the end is used to measure depth.

Nice—and it’s only $1.99?!? It seems that that would be an inexpensive way to save me lots of future (and potentially expensive) grief. Thanks for the heads-up, Jeff.
