Always in Florida.
I am temped for the 4". But would need a much bigger mount than the GP to hold it. Price is good and the lens is not fogged up and that is rare for a 1958 made U.

That Meade has no optics, no spider assembly, no primary cell studs in the rear holes. It is an 826 or 628 type scope shell and mount.
6" F/8.

A GP wouldn't be enough for that scope? I would have thought it would match up pretty well. I have never had one, didn't realize they were that heavy.
It is 6 ft. long, didn't realize that.

Scope first, mount later. A 50s OTA like that at that price comes around probably once a decade.

a very long vintage refractor ota with no objective glass marked "murrell london" which appears to to be a real 19th century maker of 3" to 4" refractors. at 91" long, if this is 4" scope it would have been around f23?
at that price, the bare body might still be useful if you have a suitable cell lying around.

This one is essentially in my backyard --- fewer than 5 miles away --- so I felt compelled to reach out to the seller, even though I've already accreted 3 (! how did that happen?) Vixen D=60mm F=910 classic refractors courtesy of Zen-Market ... and should be 'thinning the herd' (of the 2 more than I need) as opposed to adding to it.
Anyone far afield wishing they could enlist a "local buyer's agent" for this one? ((Let me know --you'd be doing me a favor, as my "telescope closet" is already full ...))

I question if it's as old as the seller states. I don't believe any of the Unitrons from the 50's had the three ears on the objective cell and the finder has the u shaped cut in the EP compression tube (can't see the one one the OTA) I'm fairly sure both weren't done until some time in the 60s.

No way. Even the 4" C-102 is about the max for me. I like my scopes mounted rock solid. That long 4" OTA would be a monster to hold on a GP.

Around late 57 into 58 is when we started to see the ears. Tubes no longer had the weights inside also and the SLO - MO knobs went to plastic.

Couple of 10" Meade's cheap. Both claim to be in good condition with working clock drive. The DS-10 looks to be garage kept, the other obviously has spent some time outdoors.

It turns out that I know the seller. We've bought/sold back and forth before. I'll be picking this up and looking at more stuff he has in the basement. I'm trying to schedule projects now instead of ping ponging around. It will be about a week before I post on the Manon.

For fans of large-aperture [and presumably long f/ratio] refractors comes this "circa 1880s telescope optics set by John Byrne of New York. The case includes the 5.32-inch aperture objective lens [mounted in its original polished brass cell], six celestial eyepieces, two terrestrial eyepieces, a Star diagonal and a Solar diagonal plus a solar filter." Everything resides in a small hardwood case, ready to be integrated into a appropriately long optical tube. Seller's asking price is $2,500 plus shipping from NY.

I sent a msg to the seller seeking information on the actual f/ratio (or focal length), and will update this post if/when I hear back.
-- Jim
EDIT: The seller just responded to me saying that he believes he determined the objective lens to be f/15 when he first acquired it, but to be certain he would check his records again.

Mayflower 4.5" reflector f=900mm. Longmont Colorado for $60.
Comes with 4 or 5 eyepieces of no big significance. Might be .965" I'm not sure.

That folks is a very early Criterion RV-6 steal of a deal. It is not a B&L. It is probably a mis identification due to a B&L eyepiece. It has the fancy lever altitude bolt, end rings on the scope, and factory black finish legs. Those early legs had the smallest casting lip that supports under the pier. They've worked fine on all the ones I've had but Criterion quickly enlarged that support lip. No big deal just a little ditty.
