Sorry for the uneducated question, but does EAA rely on the averaging of stacked images or does it rely on the summation of stacked images?

Most will average. The main benefit is that the 'numbers' representing the black and white points etc will stay in the same place throughout.

 

The effect of summing can be achieved (exactly) by multiplying the average by the number of subs, assuming the subs are of the same exposure (otherwise a weighted average can be used to reconstruct the sum).
