Even when I am imaging I can still use my 26 Nagler: As a trim weight!

And if I have a 3rd axis balance problem, just put it in a star diagonal.

Stop pulling our leg Jeff, we know that you’d rather be looking through your 26mm Nagler than use it as a trim weight! wink.gif

That’s an impressive telescope/mount setup you have in your observatory, thanks for sharing the picture! bow.gif

I was up to 22, but now am down to 14.

It's hard to believe, but once I had well more than a hundred at one time, and gradually whittled that down to 3 and then it started back up.

Just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in.grin.gif

Which three?

Which three?

At that time, it was the 21mm, 13mm, and 8mm Ethos.

That didn't last long, though.

BTW, I'm now down to 13 and starting to whittle it down.

I just boxed up six more which gets me down to ten (not counting bino viewer or solar). I'm really regretting selling my N20T5 though - mostly because it was an as new example of a discontinued eyepiece.

There’s one on FB marketplace for $425, it’s been on there for quite some time.

I wonder how the buyer is going to feel when the Nagler Type 7 comes out?

Sometime after the Type 3 is introduced.

That auction was likely just a bidding war that got out of hand.

In astronomy, there are fads. When an eyepiece is discontinued, it can acquire cult status. It happened with the original 11mm Nagler. I bought one used at a premium. It's a great eyepiece, but I think it was mainly being compared to its sibling, the 13mm Nagler, which had strong spherical aberration of the exit pupil (kidney beaning). The 11mm has a little bit if you look hard enough, but it's much easier to use than the 13mm. Cult status faded not long after I bought mine, and they now routinely sell for half of what I paid.

To clarify: you're talking about the Type 1 Naglers, not the Type 6, in case anyone didn't know which version you were referring to.

And free shipping!

Supposing that sale was successful - I don't think I would sell mine at $2,000.

But at $3,000 ....

Yes, that's why I specified the original 11mm Nagler.

Do you happen to know of anyone who sells good top caps for the original (Type 1) Naglers? They didn't come with caps, and the 9mm, 11mm, and 13mm all have different diameters.

I'm appalled by the winning bid. IMHO highway robbery and what's worse, someone gullible enough to pay it. P.T. Barnum had a saying for this scenario.

For someone who has a million bucks the price is 1/1000 of what he has. And such a person might actually have two, three, or even 5 million bucks.

Back in the 1970s when I was in school and earning minimum wage I would go out to eat at my favorite Mexican restaurant and it cost $3.50 including tip. That was 1/100 of my then net worth.

So you spend $1,100 on this eyepiece and if you like it you keep it. If you don't like it you can list it for not much less than you paid. Remember this was an auction there are other bids that drove the price up. So you can probably easily sell this eyepiece for the price of an ethos and you satisfy your curiosity for 300 bucks.

As I recently posted elsewhere, the z a o set which hit the market at about 2,400 is now north of $5,000. The Pentax XO 2.5 and XO 5.0 appear to be selling for north of $600 their original price was $250.

Sometimes these prices are driven up by one or two motivated individuals. Let's say you have 100 XO 5.0 eyepieces out there. There might be only one or two people who even give them a second thought over the course of a day and who don't check the ads regularly. You have to pry your eyepiece out of a very thin market.

Anyhow as soon as you make the sale at the inflated price in a very small specialized market, you may find that the next buyer's price point is hundreds of dollars below. The marginal price should not be confused with the average price.

30 million millionaires in the United States. A small fraction of these keep a company like astrophysics in business. But there are not enough buyers to turn astrophysics into the next general motors. There is a book " The millionaire next door". He drives a beat up Camry and doesn't typically spend a lot of money eating out. But one thing that is common to the group is that they are willing to spend money on their hobbies.

So anyhow this is the situation. If you go to the Northeast astronomy forum you see people who are focused intensely on the $300 dobs and others who spend the day talking to the guys who make $30,000 Richie Chretiens.

It's nice to see people hobnobbing from all walks of life. But on the other hand it puts you face to face with the reality of income distribution in the United States.

Article about millionaires:

https://finmasters.c...tatistics/#gref

You might think they're buying a villa in France but the reality is most of them have a 2000 square foot house in New Jersey. But if you want to understand this or any other hobby, you have to figure as a rule of thumb that 20% of the people are spending 50% of the money. A lot of those are "The millionaire next door.". There is however another category of highly motivated buyers without huge resources who are willing to eat rock soup in order to get that ZAO II 10 mm.

You know, it's not unheard of for someone to have two or more ebay accounts and put in a "winning bid" to create a history which drives the price up.

TeleVue has always been able to provide me with replacement caps, even for discontinued eyepieces. Same with boxes if anyone is obsessive and needs one.

T1 Naglers only went up to 13mm, 9mm, 7mm, 4.5 (or was it 4.7)

T2 Naglers went up through 20mm, 12mm,.....

We spent nearly a decade waiting for the 31NT5.......

The Naglers that I have never came with top caps. They are the original, blunt-nosed versions without eyecups or knurled rubber rings. I need 62mm, 54mm, and 46mm caps for the 13mm, 11mm and 9mm Naglers. The 7mm and 4.8mm have normal 1.25" caps, and they all have 1.25" bottom caps. Unfortunately Agena Astro doesn't have what I want, and the other store mentioned is off-line until March. I even went to Aliexpress and the vendors there are out of stock or don't carry the sizes I need. No biggie. I'll find something eventually or do without.
