... I called Daleen on Monday and then exchanged emails with Marj.  She was sympathetic and sold the scope to the next highest bidder.  I offered to pay the difference of $100, but she declined.

In the end, the right person got the scope, we have another data point on what good people the Christensen’s are and I have a life lesson to chew on.

Clear skies,

Ron

Wow, dodged the bullet on that one, Ron!

The second highest bidder might be a bit cheesed though, unless they roll his bid back to the $8400 mark where the errant auto-bidding started to ratchet things skyward (he would have gone as high as $15,200, but could have won it far cheaper if there was no phantom bidder).

I have no insight to what they paid.  I agree, so I figure it was some negotiated amount less than $15,200 - but I'm just guessing.

Ah, but was he the only other one auto-bidding besides Ron?

The ethical thing to do would be to hold another auction.

Yep. The other bidders dropped out at $8,400 and the auto faux-pas took over at $10,200.

Meh, I don't know. Now everyone's cards are known. Perhaps first offer it to the second highest bidder for the $10,200 he went to before the SNAFU. After all he did want it for that amount and bidding would have ended there with him being the winner.

But the other, non-auto, bidder, kept going.  Then stopped.

Regardless, at the end, it ends up being a private transaction with AP, though fun to speculate about.
