Wish I was closer!  I have already found good homes for two 10TE's through our local club here in Culpeper, VA: http://www.cloudynig...ronomy-program/.  Johann (Starman876) donated one and Will Thornton the other...one went to a 13 year old; the other to an 11 year old.  Both good homes and being used often!!

In case any of you are wondering, "Grandpa Jaeger", as I'm calling Vesper818's 75 mm achromat, has indeed found a good home and will be used extensively for outreach in northwest Ohio.

 

I'm making an unusual alt-az mount for it that should be stable, but easily adjustable for height to make it a good straight-through refractor that is easily intuitive for the newbies to use at about 100 power.

 

Photos will follow in due time. I picked up most of the materials for the mount yesterday. Thank you, Carol!

Here's most of a mid-60's Swift 6mm HM eyepiece - there's no chrome barrel, and there's some grumbus on the glass, but it seems all there.  It's better to look at than look through, and as it's the only surviving EP from my Swift, I'm not seeing a need to collect the rest of the set to not use them anyhow.

 

So....free to a good home, I'll even cover the postage if you promise to love and cherish it forever....or at least for a week or two.....

Here is a pair of heavy steel hinged 'tube rings' (2 1/4" I.D.); they are actually conduit or pipe hangers. Fairly coarse 'hinges' and 'locks'. They appear to be sand cast. Spray paint them with wrinkle finish and cover the insides with felt and you have a set of otherwise nearly impossible to find tube rings for an itty-bitty 60mm, 50mm, or 40mm refractor. Yours free. (I do need 6 bucks shipping; cash is cool). You want 'em, they're yours. PM me.

I have parted out an old Criterian RV-6, the mirrors and all the hardware went to a fellow member to restore his!

I have the mount and the tube up for grabs.

 

The mount is an Edscorp and has 6" rings, the drive motor does not work, the setting circles are broken and it will need to be restored.

The RV-6 tube is damaged but repairable. I started to sand the tube but I have an Edscorp 6" that I want to restore and not enough time.

Anyone making an 8" classic Newtonian? If so, I have a nice phenolic resin tube for you. It looks like it is for an 8" F7. It's 9 1/2" diameter and 60" long. The inside is already flat black and textured. The outside is sort of a chalky green colored material. Wall thickness is about 1/8" and it already has a hole for the focuser and is drilled for the mirror mount and spider. This is not new, it was used. It's old but in good shape. And it's free if you want it. PM me for more info or pictures. Local pickup.

How odd things can get in "The Freebie Zone". I sure would have jumped all over this, not on it, a few weeks ago if you'd of shipped it. Truth is I bought the old Cave tube from this ad: http://www.ebay.com/...=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

 

It had the aluminum end rings and the original brass(?) Astrola tag on it. Too cool. I contacted the seller about this, after his ad fell through, and we agreed on $70. He said the S&H was $51 so he was doing me a great deal IMO. Especially after his truly superb packaging which included placing taping split "Pool Noodles" foam on both ends.

 

I plan to put Coulter 8' f/7 optics in this and mount it on a beater Meade 856 mount.

Meade mount, Cave tube, Coulter Optics, what a Classic Hybrid.

I'll post pics.

Your rules in the opening post are clear, and should help to keep this thread from get overloaded with minutiae on individual items.  As a reminder to all, the rules are listed again here.  I would like to suggest that, when following rule 3, the original posting of the item be edited to show that it is no longer available if that becomes the case during the interval in which posts may be edited. That should further streamline this thread and reduce the chances of a donor being contacted after an item has been claimed. 

 

A few simple rules:

 

1.  List only items that are free to a good home and directly related to the restoration or repair of a classic telescope or other classic astronomy-related device, or reference materials that apply to same.  No compensation may be asked for, other than reasonable shipping charges.  Shipping charges may be waived by the giver, at their discretion.  Local pickup is encouraged where possible.

 

2.  Please do not accept someone's generosity if your intention is to flip the item for profit.  This is the honor system, please use it honorably.

 

3.  If you have multiple items, please list them in the same post whenever possible.  Once given away, please post in the thread that the item is no longer available.   Do not delete the item listing, this will provide a history.  Don't "bump" your post too often. 

 

4.  All communication between giver and receiver should take place via the PM system.

 

5.  Cloudy Nights assumes no responsibility for any aspect of any giveaway items listed in this thread.

The window for editing posts by the general membership was changed on May 16th to 12 hours, which was deemed sufficient time to correct typos, the main reason for the edit window.  Prior to that, it was 72 hours.  Editing the original post will not be possible after 12 hours.

 

In that instance, just note that the item is no longer available in a new post.

From a database point of view, this should not be a single thread, because a single thread offering a thousand items will always be confusing to follow. Rather, there should be a separate Classics Giveaway Forum. Every new item (or group of items to be given away as a set) would be listed in a separate thread. Once the item found a home, the OP would close the thread. The software already exists to do this. We only need to convince our sponsor to create the new Forum. Depending upon how the software works, or how they pay for it, this may cost them nothing, even if the other forums wanted similar, additional forums created.

Besides, it works well as-is.   Most items disappear immediately. The giveaway volume doesn't exist to justify a dedicated forum.   No need.

Free to a good home - this Selsi 274.  It's in very nice shape.  The mount is a bit squirrelly, but functional.  The box is not available.  Optics are decent - a Towa product with the plastic ring lens spacer.  This is for pickup in southwestern New Hampshire only, as I really don't want to ship it without a box.  I will also be at Stellafane if that would work out for you.
