Please help

My 10” LX-200 GPS has worked reliably for ten years but I haven’t used it in the last year or so. Tonight it can’t get the time, date, and location (GPS problem?). It says it has software version 4.29 (I think) and I’m not sure where to look for an update.

After automatic alignment, It slews to Sirius but is off by about 180 degrees (it is about a decade off in time).

Thank you,

Peter

Gday Peter

You may have the GPS rollover bug

Start the mount and let it get a fix

( it may take up to 15 minutes to reload its almanac if it hasnt been used for a long while )

As long as you see a string of asterixes, the GPS lump is working, but cant fix.

Once fixed, press and hold mode to get to the alternate menus

Scroll to the date/time

If you have the bug, you should get the right time, but the date will be 1024 weeks ago :-)

In that case, you need to reload the firmware or turn off the GPS and enter date/time manually.

If you do reload the firmware, do not use Meades updater or its last ROM file as it is crud.

Use the freeware StarPatch loader and the 4.2g patch to get back to normal.

Ugh! I tried to update the MEADE Updater software. It used to say

LX200 GPS SMT           and then:       Welcome to            and then        Press 0 to Align

Version 4.29                                        AUTOSTAR                                   or MODE for Menu

but now it just says

LX200 GPS

©2001 Meade

and now it can't communicate with the hand controller.

Okay. Another update. I connected to a USB to Serial adapter cable rather than the serial connector on the laptop dock, and it seems to be communicating.laugh.gif

After a minute, it says it is 2% complete, so I guess I should leave it alone and see what it comes up with. smile.gif (I don't recall noticing the 2% comment earlier so maybe I killed power because I thought it froze up)undecided.gif

Gday Peter

I tried to update the MEADE Updater software

frown.gif

I did warn re that.

Did it try to load 4.2L firmware ???

If so, you have wiped out all your user data including the history

It is self healing but all your history is gone.

If you are still loading 4.2L in safeload mode, we have no idea what

the final result will be, as the rom is too big to fit in memory

and has a lot of new bugs.

You can keep recovering using safeload mode but as per before

i strongly suggest using StarPatch to load patched 4.2g

Remember, in safeload mode, only the left side rs232 port ( next to Hbx port )

works, and it only runs at 9600 baud.

Except that the laptop fell asleep and shut down the Automatic AutoStar Updater program, it worked okay.

After telling the laptop not to sleep when plugged in, and waiting three hours to upload, it is now working.

Hooray,

Peter

I’m not sure what history data is so losing it might not be the end of the world.

Regarding StarPatch, I’m still not sure where that fits in. Is that a loader program or is it what gets loaded?

I went to the StarPatch website and it looked like they sell a GPS unit. Since I have a working GPS, I’m not sure  what I do with them.

Thanks for your help,

Peter

Gday Peter

I’m not sure what history data is so losing it might not be the end of the world.

If it loaded 4.2L, you have lost all your asteroids, satellites, comets, tours, landmarks

as well as all your basic setup data, name and address, site locations, PEC, SMT etc.

Regarding StarPatch, I’m still not sure where that fits in. Is that a loader program

It is a loader program that is more robust than Meades ASU and properly checks data

before and during loading/overwriting, and allows dynamic patching of the rom files.

I went to the StarPatch website and it looked like they sell a GPS unit

He sells GPS lumps that can be used on many mounts.

With Meade 497/Audiostars, he developed patches to fully integrate his lump into the firmware.

He also wrote a loader utility to load his patches .

Over time, his patch has merged into our general patches

( that fix lots of bugs and add enhancements )

and he graciously has made his loader freely available for people

who just want to load our patched firmwares.

You can do a Paypal donation on his site if you like it, but its not necessary,

the loader is fully functional, just speed limited for half the load.

I have not used my scope in a VERY long time, Meade LX200GPS and I do have the rollover issue.  My firmware is reported as 4.2g.  Just downloaded StarPatch so that will be a project in a day or two.

Gday rmille

Easiest way is to look on the StarPatch site for the patch dates

Last update for the LX200GPS was April 2019
