I bought a used 497 controller to replace my bricked 494 controller for my ETX-70.

I received it but there is one problem. The controller is in Spanish language, firmware version 42S.

Is there anyway to replace firmware with an English version one, and if yes are there anywhere on the web the firmware files. On the Meade website there is no download info for 497.

I also would like to know about the connection cable for the ETX-70.

I own a 506 cable for the 494 but the 497 is not compatible with the 506. I checked that the 505 cable is something simple enough. Can I use an rj10 to rj10 cable to connect it on the telescope (from one side) and to a rj10 to serial adapter on the other side and then connect to a serial to usb cable I used to use with my 506 cable so I can connect the telescope to my PC?

Gday Scientist

I have heard of German and Dutch for the early 497s, but not Spanish

Basically, if it is a true 497 ( or 495 with 2 memory chips ) it can be simply updated to 43Eg.

I always suggest using the freeware StarPatch loader instead of Meades ASU

http://www.stargps.ca/downloads.htm

as StarPatch is more robust, and also allows you to patch the basic rom to remove bugs

and add some enhancements as well.

StarPatch also hosts the rom and patch files needed to do the job.

As you note, the 506 converter wont work with a 497 based mount.

Any std COM port ( or USB rs232toSerial converter ) can be used with the correct wiring

into the plug, which goes into the port on the handbox for a 497 ( ref piccy ),

( not the Aux port on the mount like with a 506 )

You will need to confirm if the cable you have matches the required pinouts.

Thanx for your detailed reply OzAndrewJ.

So i can download StarPatch from the page you linked and the rom file (Build43Eg.rom i guess?)

Regarding the cable thanx for the notice i didn't notice the second port on the left on the 497 and i would connect the cable on the aux on the ETX-70.

I will buy an rj10 to rj10 cable so i can connect the left port on the 497 to a rj10 to serial adapter i own and this adapter to another adapter serial to usb.

Practically it was the setup i used for the 506 and i will replace the meade cable with the small box from telescope to rj10 to serial adapter with an rj10 to rj10 cable.

Wish me luck!

Gday Scientist

Just download and install StarPatch

Start it up and select the handset as type 497 and then use the integrated downloader

to grab the correct patch and rom from his site.

It should get 43Eg.

Load the spf file into the edit box, dese;lect the top 2 or 3 options tied to the StarGPS lump

and then load the rest.

i didn't notice the second port on the left on the 497 and i would connect the cable on the aux on the ETX-70.

And that can fry things, as the Aux port is wired differently to the Hbx rs232 port.

( It uses Meades proprietary I2C/clocked serial on pins 2 and 3  at TTL levels.

The gotcha is the Aux port has a solid +12V pin in it, and if this goes to the wrong part

the magic smoke comes out.)

As to wiring, if you do use plug adapters double check the wiring order

I have update on the situation.

I received the rj10 to rj10 cable, checked it with rja10 to serial cable and thw wiring seems OK. So i proceeded with the update to 43Eg via StarPatch.

It started to update the 497 and it tooks about 15 minutes to complete the procedure.

During the procedure there were a lot of write errors on different addreses.

After finalization i was sure that the 497 was not in a working order with so many errors. I was wrong, it seems to works OK, everything is in English and seems to have no problem.

Any ideas why those errors appeared and if this is going to be a problem?

If StarPatch gets a write error, it retries, so maybe your baud was too high

or there was corrosion on the contacts etc

Either way, if it didnt stop totally, it should have worked.

Hi there OzAndrewj

I set the baud rate at 9600, as for the corrosion all the cables are new.

After any error I had a window asking me if its OK or to stop, always pressed OK and the upgrade continued.

Anyway, after the upgrade seems to be working correctly, so I think I am OK.

as for the corrosion all the cables are new.

What about the pins inside the handbox????

Again, if it kept going after thre retry, it is most likely OK.

As you have loaded the patched firmware, there are ways to read

out the memory from the Flash chips if you want to double check

but if its working, just use it.

I will check them and come back.

How can i check the flash chips, is there some specific procedure?

Gday Scientist

To read out the contents of the handbox, i have a small app.

It simply reads out whats in there and that can be compared to

a source rom, to see if it matches.

Based on using StarPatch, and that it actually finished OK

i wouldnt worry about that yet,
