For 30 years while working at the Cernan Space Center every weekend I saw the one and only Questar cut up model made for the S&T adds starting in the early '60s.  Just a few days ago it was returned to the Adler Planetarium after having been at Cernan since about 1985.   I had tried a few times to aquire it for myself but to no avail. Now back at Adler it may make itself into a display case but time will tell...

Was it loaned to Cernan and Adler was the original owner?

I have a little background on the cutaway Questar on this page of my Questar history (scroll down to the section entitled "Machining"). Long story short, Questar seems to have donated it to the Adler Planetarium by the early 1970s.

Thanks for sharing this little tidbit, Darren!

I certainly hope to have the chance to see this on display next time I'm in the area.  Your photos were indispensable in my project to replicate this historic piece.

Adler Planetarium in the 1960’s was instrumental in my choosing to pursue a career in astronomy (I later switched to physics). I never new their association with Questar. Very interesting.

Let's take Questar up on it's QC and it's promise to fix "almost anything". So, here you go Questar, let's see you take this "cutup Questar" and make it perfect again. Hmmmmm?

Clear skies and keep looking up!

Not many parts left intact. The right arm. Some knobs. Base plate.
