Would I be able to mount an ETX 70 ,as a guide scope, on the RV6 (6" f/8 Criterion). If possible, any ideas how? Thanks, Luis

O.K., let me re-phrase my question. Any of you out there with a 60-70mm guide scope on your 6"/f8 Reflector? I want to install my ETX 70, and if feasible, would like some ideas. Is it too big, would it strain the motor?

Thanks in advance,

Luis.

No it's not too big. In fact, it's probably too small to use as a guide scope. Are you talking about guiding visually or with an autoguider CCD?

Ooops! I may have used the wrong word. I didn't mean to imply photography in the post. I meant a 'finder scope'. Does it make a difference? Thanks.

No it should not be a strain at all I have an 80 mm scope on my model 628 6" f8 before you start drilling any holes in tube you might want to concider mounting the scope on a dove tail mounted to the rings for the OTA thats what I did and it allows for easy of tube movement for ballance with eyepices and cameras ect.... I will try to take digital pic and post of scope if interested. You might need an extra counter weight if the shaft is one inch should be easy to find though.

I dont think 70 mm would be to low just to narrow a field you might want to concider at some point in time investing in a widerfield type scope for a finder I used a 60 mm for years. but if budget is a concideration I would go ahead and mount the 70mm. If the 70 is it you can also get a telrad for short money and use it for zero power and then go to the refractor A dove tail set up also allows you to use diffrent scopes ie finder or guide scope for photo applications. The RV6 will carry it all well, also for the mount if you want to find casters and such you can try McMaster and Carr for hardware. good luck if you need any suggetions post or PM clear skies and welcome to the classic scope world

Jon and Charles,
I have a telrad on the scope and a finder (can't find the mounting bracket - if anyone has one, please let me know). What dovetail should I get? I'm not too familiar with those.

Thanks

Charles, thanks for the offer. I need to take more time to write my posts (right now I'm in the middle of cooking dinner ). I have a Telrad mounted and lost the bracket for the 6x30 finder.

For a number of years I had a 60mm refractor mounted on my RV6. It worked out fine. When I gave the RV6 to one of my sons, he elected to mount the refractor separately, and is still using both scopes. Incidently, he's now using a Telrad for a finder on the RV6.

You can't beat the Telrad as a finder, which means I'm not restoring this RV6 to original condition. As a matter of fact, how taboo would it be to paint the tube black? Any advantages over white? Thanks.
